I'll also probably pick up a USB-serial dongle as a secondary connection for some of the embedded machines I need to connect to around here.
I picked up a few USB <-> RS-232 adapters and ran through a series of loopback tests for pretty much the same reasons last year.
SIIG USB to Serial v1.0 was my favorite. It was the only one to survive the 230 kbps loopback test (all the rest maxed out at 115 kbps). The cable is thinner and the stress relief smaller than the others, but it's also the only one that's longer than 12"-18". It actually coils up into a smaller bundle than the others as well. I also looked at one from Belkin and one from IO Gear.
