I bike to work occasionally: 20 miles each way; 1:10 in, 1:20 home on a good day, 5 minutes more if I'm dragging (or there's a bad headwind off the Potomac). It's about 45 minutes in and home during rush hour by car.
What area do you live in? I'm driving along the Potomac.
My trip to work varies tremendously. First, I have a normal shift and a later shift (2.5 hours later). Here’s how my seven mile commute breaks down:
Normal shift, during school year:
To work: 50 minutes to 75 minutes
From work: 25 minutes
Normal shift, during summer break:
To work: 30 minutes
From work: 25 minutes
Late shift at any time of the year:
To and from work: 13 minutes
I always find these figures interesting. It really is a short distance to work, but because this city wasn't exactly designed for commuting (we have a highway taking up the nicest part of the waterfront), it takes longer than it should. Oh well, I'm not complaining too much, because I know a lot of people have it worse.
Besides, the commute doesn't bother me. Other drivers do.
