Check for a working TCP/IP configuration on your computer. I had to reinstall Windows (98) completely, when winipcfg wasn't working. If properly configured, try to ping the empeg.
You can leave the gateway address empty, or enter the same IP address as the empeg's.
Although you may think the connection is okay, since the link leds are on, be absolutely sure the cable is ok as well as the pins not been bent.
