Using 2.2.14-rmk5-np17-empeg50-hijack-v253 ... trying to update to a newer kernel, but somethings wrong ... I see serial output from the empeg, but it won't accept any serial input (i.e. keyboard, kernel updates). Can't seem to figure out how to get back in the box to update the software.

Need more input than above? Let me know I'll be happy to provide. Hopefully this is a known issue and there's some stupid thing I'm forgetting to do.

Sometimes I've seen this with a bad cable. Or a straight-thru cable when you need a crossover or vice versa.

Sometimes I've seen this problem solved when I just reboot the empeg itself, then serial works after that.

Ok that was it ... but my new question is, how can a cable that once was good suddenly turn bad, with no abuse or misuse on my part?

I've had lots of serial cables just fray over time. It just happens. Including the one I had the empeg plugged into. Don't remember if it was the one that came with the player or not.

Another thought: Have you installed anything else that might be attaching to the serial port? Palm Pilot, etc? Are your settings correct?
