Gizmodo is now linking to the Empeg BBS for a picture of the Karma ... Rob asked early on in this thread that we not send out links to pictures that appear here. I know it's getting closer to release, but I assume this request still stands. Please everyone try to respect his request or I'm sure it will get tougher for him to convince Rio that it's OK to put early access information/pictures here for us to gawk at.

I think that that picture is okay since it does not look like it comes from the developers themselves (or does it?)
The pictures that I think they mean not to send out are the ones when it was still in development, the ones where it showed the player inside the dock, and a Coke can compared to the dock and player.

I'm with you.
I would hope that the gizmodo place found this thread on their own and someone from here didn't send them the link. I'm sure gizmodo doesn't give a crap about Rob asking not to link the pictures they just want to post their stupid little blurb.

Yep.
Please don't repost those pics anywhere else. I got special permission to post them to the empeg BBS.
I think the keyword in that sentence from Rob is "those", meaning only the pictures that he posted at the time of writing.

The pics that I posted were from J&R website before they pulled the page down. Unless Rob or J&R takes exception, I don't see a problem.

Unfortunately the point at which BBS threads start getting linked from larger sites is the point at which I'll have to stop talking about grey area things, i.e. stuff which is not quite public but not restricted either. This is a good place to try out ideas and get reactions from a small group of people, but I don't want to see myself quoted in places where the "off the record" aspect may not be fully understood.
If we stick to talking about the car player then nobody else will care enough to pay attention

Question:
Is there a way that the anonymous user features of the BBS can be disabled until after said (undated) release? It still would not deal with anyone signing up on the BBS only for data, but it would cut off the random seekers.

Spurred on by your chutzpah in trying to pre-order from J&R, I did the same thing with the amazon link. Now, you can no longer find the Karma by searching but the link now shows the price at $499.99 instead of the $443.99.
I took the liberty of adding a review while I was there .

Anyone else notice how many page views this thread has?
Outside linking or not, looks like the Karma is pretty damn popular.
I hope this is a sign of things to come. Good job guys, it looks awesome!

Click here for the updated page!
The 500 means 500 CDs; they're probably trying to impress the majority of music listeners who might not know what a "gigabyte" or whatever is. They assumed a low 10 songs per CD, meaning 5000 songs. If each song is about 4 MB, that'll be 20,000 MB, or about 20 GB (I think that's what it says, I don't read Japanese or anything though).
Makes sense though, G 20SS.
If you also look in the background of the 13 and 500 pages, you'll see a slim preview of the player. The screen seems a little small, but eh.
The next date is 8/12 for the number: 10. 10 hour battery life? Perhaps. Who knows.
So far though it doesn't seem to be that impressive except in slimness.

Hmm, should we start a new thread just for the Karma? This topic seems too vague, unless everyone's mindset is that the Karma IS the best portable player haha. Besides, this is getting really long.

Because apparently you missed the other thread, in which setting up a dedicated Karma discussion was considered and rejected. And to keep the external linking to this thread to a minimum, General >> General is now hidden until login. So until an official announcement, I think that's it. zzzzz

OK, OK.
Go back and take a look at a handful of updates to Amazon's page.

Interesting! Following the link up to other DNNA products lists thie Chiba 256 as "Available for pre-order" and "This item will be released on August 21, 2003." Since the smaller Chiba doesn't have a date / time stamp, I do not know if Amazon is serious or not...
I wonder who the one reviewer for the 40GB Karma was... (no, not me)

Another thing that is interesting is that Amazon lists the Rio Karma's battery life as 20 hours?
And they changed the Amazon.com price back to $444. Ahh Amazon stop doing stuff! Either get it right or take it off!
