Hi
I installed RMM 2.6 today but it won't finish scanning my music library, I'm running XP Pro on a 1.2 Celeron/384 Mb Ram and it's around 21,000 tracks. I've had it up to around 82% before it hangs, any ideas anyone?
Thanks

In the past, if RMM chokes while scanning your music, it was caused by a file someplace that's confusing it. Like an MP3 with a bunch of garbage in its tags or something.
The people working on RMM have tried very hard to prevent this situation from happening, so they are keen to ferret out any remaining bugs in this area. If you can locate a particular file that's causing the trouble, they might want to have a look at it and see why it's causing RMM to hang.

Hi Tony
The problem is I don't know how I'm going to find the file, when it hangs the screen blanks and according to TaskManager it stops responding, it's happened at various points in the scan (46%, 72%, 84%). My tags should be clean, I'm rigorous with my tagging, and it's never been a problem in Tag&Rename or MP3Manager. Anyway I'm on my 4th attempt now (and I've checked the disk for errors) so I'll repost when it's done (or not)
Thanks

The problem is I don't know how I'm going to find the file Divide and conquer. Move half the folders off to another place that RMM isn't scanning. Lather rinse repeat. Should be able to narrow it down in a few passes.

could be a bad playlists file, mine was crashing with bad/empty m3u files. Deleting all playlists files got rid of my problems.

If it is a bad playlist file causing RMM to crash, that would be very interesting, because I thought that was a known bug in RMM that had long since been fixed by 2.60. If you can narrow it down to that, please save the playlist file in question, they might want to look at it and see what the problem is.

It's completed! I reckon it must have taken around 5 hours though, my playlists directory wasn't in the Music Location list so that can't have been the problem, maybe disk check did find something.
BTW thanks everyone.
My next problem is the Karma, I received it yesterday but it had a US power lead & warranty, the MFs won't take it back cos the packagings open (should have used my X-Ray vision)

Maybe it's just me and my paranoid mind, but it sounds like they've gotten some from sources other then Rio UK, ie they've imported some from the US or directly from China.
Very grey/gray market.
Apart from that you should be able to argue that the good sold to you are not of merchantable quality.

After you've given them the opportunity to explain themselves and put things right amicably, I'm hoping!
N.B. Strange, the Mann site can't find the Karma, if you search.

I have tried, they said:
Mann Electronics/ everything-ipod.co.uk are happy to provide refunds for any item returned to us. The item must be unopened and in the condition received.Simply return to: Mann (GB) Ltd Returns E5, Unit 112 Churchill Business Centre, Stirling Way, BOREHAMWOOD WD6 5RY
I said:
I'll return it today or tomorrow, however:
1. It is opened, that's how I discovered that it wasn't a UK item.
2. I don't see why I should have to pay P&P for an item that is mis-sold, nowhere in the product description on your website does it state that the item is non UK sourced.
They Said:
Opened items cannot be accepted for return
Thanks!

Sorry, I didn't realise you had got that far, otherwise I wouldn't have posted as I did, I should get straight on to these people:
Hertfordshire Trading Standards is urging customers to shop around for the best deals when buying on credit, to watch out for fake merchandise and always keep receipts. For more information contact Hertfordshire Trading Standards on 01438 737300 or 01923 471300.
failing, and as well: [email protected], who, even if they don't take your case up have, on a couple of occasions, forced a climb down from companies where I've had a problem: They can do without the hassle and the threat of publicity.
You may well find this site helpful.

I received it yesterday but it had a US power lead & warranty, Something to consider:
1. The power supply, if I recall correctly, can handle UK voltages, you merely need the pin adapter so you can plug it into a UK outlet. You don't need a voltage converter, just the little plug that makes the pins fit. So you could just get one of those, they are not expensive.
2. Warranty must be honored by UK law, regardless of what's printed on the warranty card. Besides, the player will probably work fine and you'll never need to claim on the warranty.
So maybe you don't need to worry about returning it?

Yes, but the Karma gives you 1 year's manfacturers warranty. Under UK law you statutary rights are less than the 1 year's warranty. There is nothing to say that Rio UK have to honour the extra warranty on goods imported from somewhere else without the additional warranty included.
I'm not saying they won't honour it, but if it is a US sourced Karma they are within their rights to refer the customer to Rio US and its 90 day warranty.
It wouldn't be worth the risk unless it was very cheap.
If he had wanted to take that risk he could have bought it from the US and probably got it for £200 rather than the £270+ he probably paid for it. They should give him his money back, legally and morally.

Hi,
In the UK there is no mention of a specific time in reguards to warranties, it just says "a reasonable time for the product" and is capped at 6 years. So you can ignore the 1 year warranty, it's just a red herring!
As for the product being imported, in this case it is not important, as in the UK the contract is between you can the vendor (ie Amazon or Mann etc...) so if it bought from a UK vendor is would be down to them to argue with Rio not you.
On the other hand if you imported it yourself they you would have to do the dealing with Rio in the US, and if Rio UK decided to honour it here then great but they are under no obligation to do so.
I got all this info from my local Trading Standards Office before I bought my Karma
Cheers
Cris.

I know, and I hope not but that's not the point, I could have imported one from the US myself for less than £200, I paid these guys £262.00, if I'd wanted a US machine I would have bought one.

As I said above it wasn't cheap, and secondly this firm don't give a f**k about legal obligations (let alone moral ones), anyway I've written to them and my credit card co. as advised by the TSO telling them of their obligations under the Sale of Goods Act & the Distance Selling Act so hopefully I'll get a result.

It's not hard and fast in this respect, I spoke to two different TSO's and they both offered slightly different interpretations. If the item is classified as a computer accessory (by whom??) then the rules are different. Also warranty is a funny one in the UK, unless the product is advertised by the seller as having a specific warranty you cannot assume it has one, and I was told by TSO not to mention the warranty as an issue in my rejection letter.
Anyway I don't care, I've got my new Karma (from Amazon) connected up and synching, so I'll have something decent to listen to on the way home.
Thanks again for everybodys concern, I definitely didn't get anything like this on the Apple forums when I had problems with my crapPod

Just a little update, I sent Mann GB a letter via recorded delivery stating the fact that they're in contravention of the Sale of Goods Act and the Distance Selling Regulations and they've decided to take the Karma back AND pay my return postage.

A Result! I'm really pleased.
But I'm also really pleased with my Karma and wouldn't like to be without it...you can play with the controls for hours without listening to the music!
May I suggest Amazon will deal with you in a very above the board manner .

Back to the original topic: RMM 2.6
I'm still having problems, it seems to scan fine initially, the last scan I did got up to 49% (10490 tracks) in around 1/2 hour, but then RMM stopped responding, blank screen if it's in the foreground. I left it running last night (after around 3 hours of not responding) when I got in this morning the scan had completed. I'm running a celeron 1.1 384mb ram XPpro.
Any suggestions?
Also did anybody try the newer version of RioRad?
Thanks
Tahir
