hello,

since a week or so (i donßt use my car every day, lately) my empeg will boot; play music for 1-2 seconds then freeze and reboot; sometimes it freezes at the second boot, sometimes it plays music again but is uncontrollable and sometimes the display stays black; what can be the cause for this behavior?

EDIT: it's a mk2 running 2.00 and HiJack v362 at the moment, but I tried with v410 too.

It might be a bad track.

Hi;

I thought of that too, but it does so even in tuner mode...it seems "more complicated"; just now it worked again but i bet if I try to start it now, it won't work...

is there something more I can do to explain the problem?

The bad track might be choking the player even if you quickly go to tuner mode. You might want to check out Paul's link just in case to eliminate it.

Hi,

I tried it and the player booted fine; but I get "memory violation" errors in Hyperterminal; I append the file.

Nothing in that file. You have to keep the size down. ZIP it or something.

thinking of this: is it possible that a bad track gets the player to reboot even if it's not the track actually playing? If so I could erase everything and reload artist by artist and checking if it works with every track and maybe that way I find a bad track?

But what remains are the "memory violation" messages I get while the player is booting.

From that command line, can you try a "player -i" command? The memory violation error is something I would expect if the player application hits a bad track. Or (almost) anything else bad, for that matter.

Yes, the "./player -i" comand is in there somewhere; I should have shortened the text a little..

I think I should shoot a 5 min movie of the empeg to show the problem, it's kinda bizarre...

Hmmm... Okay. I see the player -i now. Assuming this is a one disk player, have you noticed any previous problems with the audio that might be signs of disk issues? Have you tried reapplying the 2.0 upgrade file? Do you have any other programs running on your player?

Hi;

It's a one-disc player.

No, until now it worked great. I think it froze one or two times since I use it (18 months), but no audio quality degradation or such; I reapplied 2.0beta13, then 2.0final and I also tried different HiJack versions but still the same.
Wa I write, it's been playing music since 25 minutes without problems (it's not connected to the PC so I can't see what the serial port is putting out, but I guess it's okay); but before that I had to unplug the cord at least 3 times.

Software running should be empire and empacman; do you think I should temporarily delete them just to see what happens? Still, I think it would be strange if it worked because both programs are running since august last year.

I'm pretty clueless...

Hmmm... I am not sure either. Do you see the problem both at home and in the car? Has it been a long time since the drive was checked with fsck? It should not be the third party software, but...

Hi,

I tried to manually FSCK twice; the first time it seemed to work, but then problems started soon after and after the second try 3 days later it hung just after rebooting...

The problem is there on AC and DC; could it be the hard drive giving up?

Possible, but I would have expected some other symptoms - clicking, distortion, skips, etc. It might be the header, though. Have you inspected your drive cable for loose connections?

Hi,

yes, checked that too, and to make sure it's ok I connected the hard drive to the connector that's for the second harddisk (I moved the drive); and the header on the mainboard is ok too...I really hope it's not an Hardware problem of any kind...

I am wondering if it could be a dry solder joint. After that, I would start to think hardware - maybe memory. Do you notice if there is any pattern at all to the failures? The unit being hot or cold? You might want to try a boot with a control-T to get into the self test.

There's not really a pattern; I would even say no pattern at all, it just happens, and that is what buggers me...I never dropped it, it worked flawless for way over a year and now it's starting making problems...

I tried the "Ctrl-T" test, and got nothing strange out of it...

I'm going to bed now as it's 2 in the morning here, but I'll check the mainboard for some partially disconnected components that may be due to a dry solder joint?

thanks for your help, paul; I really hope we can sort this out...

Would anything goofy in the config.ini file along with those 3rd party aps that could cause this if something was corrupt?

Either comment-out or remove the ;@EXEC and ;@EXEC_INCE lines in the config.ini file and then try again. You can use Hijack FTP to access the file, even with the player crashing away in the background.

Eg. Something vaguely like this sequence:Code:

ftp your.players.ip.address
cd /empeg/var
get config.ini
quit

<<edit the file on your pc>>

ftp your.players.ip.address
cd /empeg/var
site rw
put config.ini
site ro
quit

Cheers

Hi,

this seems to have made the empeg way more stable, I justl got a reboot twice since 4 hours ago; will do a "long-term test" until next week, so maybe it's ok now.

What still buggers me is why it went ok for so long before starting this bizarre behaviour?

Well, running v3a8 will do that to ya! It uses a lot more memory than some earlier releases, and every byte counts.

If you want to restore pacman etc.. then you could (1) stick them on ;@MENUEXEC lines instead of ;@EXEC lines, and then just select them from the Hijack menu on demand; or (2) try adding a ReserveCache=64 line (or similar) to config.ini on the player.

Cheers

Hi,

I guess I was too optimistic. It still behaves like before.

Today I wantewd to check if there are some dry solder joints or such and I found a "bridge" between 2 of the "legs" of the "smsc" chip near the ethernet connector; the bridge is on the ethernet connector side too, for orientation. I guess thic chip is for the ethernet connection, so maybe it doesn't affect the player.

The pic is small, but I hope it's understandable; my question is: is this correct or could this be the cause for at least some problems I'm having?

EDIT: I found this on 2 other chips, the one with the "crystal" logo and the other is a smaller one; just near the intel StrongARM, labeled P98AB LVX4245 (2 of them side by side)

It won't be the solder joints, so leave the board alone!

Next step, if you have not tried it yet: Actually, this should have been the first thing to try:

Connect to the player's serial port, hit "control C" to get a shell prompt (developer s/w required -- upgrade if necessary), and the do "player -i".

Hi Mark,

don't be afraid, I am not trying to make things worse here; I just noticed these things and thought that maybe it could be something. I'm the first to think that it can't be these "bridges" that I saw because until now the player was fine and these bridges can't just have come out of nothing.

I've done that; in the boot log I posted on page 1 in approx. the middle of the text there's the line where I sent that comand; and what happened afterwards.

Now I have another thing in my mind: I could delete all the tunes from the empeg, format the drive and start from scratch; could this be helpful?

TIA

Those "bridge" solder joints are likely to be correct. The pins are simply connected to each other via a track on the board. Because of this, when they are reflowed, the solder easily flows and bridges the two pins.

Because this makes visual inspection difficult, we try not to do this and instead run a small loop out of one pad into the other rather than straight between them.

I agree with Mark, not your problem.

What version of player software is this?

If it is not v2final or v2.01final, then reinstall one of those two. Actually, just *do it* anyway. This will fix any corrupted binaries that might be the problem here. The log messages indicate that /bin/sh is failing, due to lack of memory or corruption (bad bits) in the file itself. I think the latter is extremely unlikely though, so it's almost certainly lack of memory.

This is a Mk2 unit, with only 12MB, NOT ENOUGH for any of the v3alpha releases to run reliably on. So.. (re)install v2final or v2.01final on it.

If *that* then fails, it's time for the disk builder software to blow everything away. But I think that should never be necessary, and in the past has nearly always proven a waste of time.

Cheers

Hi Mark,
the player is running 2.00 (I downloaded it from the empeg.com site and reinstalled it 2 days ago), but it's been running on 2.00 for some months now.

I will reinstall it once again.
I guess a memory upgrade would really be worth getting at this point..

Okay, good. And please post an updated boot log afterward, if it's still failing. It's important for us to see *exactly* what is currently happening (as opposed to what was there a few days ago) -- there may be subtle differences to pick up on.

Thanks

Sounds to me like the dodgy cable issue - it can also cause the tuner to "hang" as the player gets screwed up sometimes in the background. Does this happen in both modes?

V3 alpha7 runs just dandy on my mk2 with 12mb. In addition, it also runs palantir and emphatic 2.03 with no problems.

Ok, here it is, a fresh boot log after an uptate to v2.0; you can see that it reboots a couple of times. I interrupted the prcedure, as i think it was unnecessary.

Hi,
could a bad header produce this error?

I think so. I'm not sure why Mark explicity said it wouldn't be soldering problems. That would include bad IDE cables too.

Mark,
Can you explain why you think it's not a dodgy cabling or soldering. Is it simply because they aren't actually drive errors? If the cable was only a little bit dodgy couldn't date get corrupted enough to cause program crashes?

I just meant that it wouldn't be solder-bridges and the like.

Since all else seems well, I suppose the good old most common failure mode for this product could easily be the culprit -- bad IDE header solder job?

Hi;

what can I do in this case? Re-heat the solder joints for the header?

I think I can exclude the cable as a problem at this point, as I get the same problems no matter on which connector I connect the hard drive; is this correct?

Simply go through all of the bullet points in the appropriate FAQ entry, read them carefully, and do what it says.

No, you've merely verified that the problem happens on both connectors, meaning that there's a possibility that both connectors could be the problem, or that it's not the connectors at all and is any one of the myriad other bullet points in the FAQ, or that your problem is completely unrelated to the hard disk at all.

The standard solution to this problem, during the days of official support was as follows:

- Weird behaviour, lockups, stuftering or distorted sound: data path failure.

- First inspect serial boot log. CS4231A recognised and initialised OK?If yes, keep reading. If not, probable chip failure. You are in big poo-poo. However, this is not the end of the world. Contact support (me) sometime in the next month or so when I will be restarting repair work.

- second, crimp/change cable. If you have the grey with pink stripe original cable, this can be crimped successfully if you do it properly. If you are unsure, change cable to later grey/charcoal stripe. If you have grey/charcoal, you cannot sucessfully crimp it without destroying it. Improvement? If no, keep reading.

- third, case open, drives out. Inspect the IDE header, especially if you have a 2A/RioCar as this was the model it happened most frequently on. If you have a Mk2, it is unlikely, but not impossible, that this was the case.

If all this is OK and the player is in trouble, then it's the data on the disk, ie. YOUR MUSIC.

In the boot logs I recorded (I posted some of them) it seems ok to me.

Got a new cable from Eutronix, but still the same behavior.

I gently reheated all of the pins as they seemed dry to me, but things are not getting better.

I didn't erase my music from the player, but I tried this: I installed the disk builder image and connected a 6GB and a 40GB harddrive, I got the same memory violation errors as before.
I realy think i should send it in if that is possible again; Rob, I'm not in a hurry but let me know what I can do.

Thank you,

rudy
