Wow, two Empegs go on the same day (Bill's also on the 20th).

I believe I'm running 2 beta 13, though my emplode is 2.0.14.0 (not sure that means anything). Also running Hijack 4.17. Had my empeg for 2.5 years now, have had the no hard disk message several times. Recrimped the connector last year and I've been fine since. On Monday, the player was working fine all day, then I get back in the truck, and it won't boot, and nothing's worked since. Opened her up and the main connector needed crimping, but that didn't help, either. One of the pads on the connector at the motherboard almost looks like it never had solder on top of it. But there is no wiggling that I can tell. I rebooted with pressure on the main connector, and nothing different. Any help is appreciated. I'll be gone over the weekend, so I'll let the great minds here stew...

Here's the serial boot ( it just stops mid-line at different points each boot, HT doesn't recognize any keypresses, either). Apparently there is a bad sector on the drive, but I'm not positive what to do now. I can't drop to the shell prompt for some reason.

Okay, there was some funny stuff going on copying and pasting from hyperterminal, so I kept rebooting, trying to get a good log. Basically, over 15 or 20 boots, I was getting a lot of read_intr status= 0x59 and 0x1 errors. Bad sector....3:00 sector 0, I believe. Trying to copy, a lot of the lines were getting mixed around, a lot of "drive1/fids", etc. lines were being inserted in random spots. Then this happens...

Well damn. She just booted for the first time in about 20. So here's that log (weird things missing and inserted in it, too.):

First off, either use a terminal program other than HyperTerminal or use HyperTerminal's text capture feature instead of a copy-and-paste from the scrollback. Those corrupted logs are a bear to read. (You know, HyperTerminal's only been a part of Windows for 10 years now. Maybe it's time to fix those bugs.)

That said, the read_intr messages point definitively to a hardware problem. Go through the "No hard disk found" FAQ and see if any of those troubleshooting methods help.

Okay, given that it *does* boot successfully once in a while, the boot drive is fine, and so is the RAM. So that leaves mechanical issues with the cabling and/or IDE header as pretty much the only real possibilities.

Cheers

Okay, weekend is over, thanks for the suggestions so far. I opened up the Empeg again today. I removed the IDE cable, recrimped the connectors. Tried re-booting, no disk found. Rebooted with main connector being pressured into the motherboard, same. Connected the drive to the end of the cable, same deal. Again, there are a couple of pads (various locations) on the motherboard connector that show very little solder on the top of the pads. Wiggling the connector doesn't show any obvious signs of loose pads. So because it booted once, there's not a possibility that it is not a bad hard drive? Or a hard drive going bad?

How about a clean boot log to look at?
