Update
After opening my Empeg up and looking at the drives, I found the problem. The Master/Slave jumper had actually fallen off the slave drive. I had it on there pretty good, or so I thought. I'm going to use a little electrical tape to keep that sucker on. Anyway, if anyone else ever sees this, take a look at your jumpers. Don't know if this is FAQ-worthy or not, but maybe instructing people to tape down the jumper might save some benefit to others.

I'm so relieved that it's not something more serious. Whew!

---

I put my Empeg in my car today and it hung at the user logo, so when I got home, I plug it in and look at the serial output. I'm going to paste it in here and hope that someone has ideas about what has happened. It should be noted that the failure is disk drive related, and I installed a 2nd drive last week. It was running fine until today, however... Anyway if it doesn't sound like something I can fix, I might be emailing Empeg support and working through it there.. Just wanted to know if anyone else has ever seen this one. My initial guess is some problem with the ATA cable, or possibly the hard drive itself.. Sigh. My warranty is now gone so I sincerely hope this is something I can fix

Just a guess, since I don't know linux error messages, but it sounds like hardware trouble.

First things first. Open the player and check the cabling. Then remove that second disk and see if it boots OK after that.

If so, plug the second drive back in and see if it magically boots (maybe a loose cable?). If not, unplug the first drive and re-format the second drive using Mike's builder upgrade. If that's successful, let it stresstest a while. If that's OK, then perhaps someone here can give advice on how to do a full surface scan of the drive?

If a jumper is loose enough to fall off and needs to be taped in place, then it cannot be making electrical contact. I'd suggest you either crimp it so it grips better (depending on how it's made) or get a new one.

I don't think we've ever seen this before - it's certainly not a common problem.

Good catch. Maybe just bending the pins a little bit will help it make contact and stay on better?

looks to me like the second drive jumper isn't working right.. try disconnecting the second drive, and booting it without it. if that works.. it's the second drive not being a good boy and slaving to the first disk.
