I have been trying and trying to get an old mk2 player to boot up, and keep getting the infamous 'No hard disk found...' error. I have checked the faq and threads, and have checked the header cable and other items that I have found, with no luck so far.
So I figured to start from square one (again), and 'hypertermed' into the unit (with the serial cable) and here is what came up

It looks like you probably have a fried ethernet chip. It's got a stuck bit or two. I've not been too good at interpretting the IDE tests, but at least D5 looks stuck low. You will need to cut the line or lift the pin to this or replace the chip.

Are you sure you're having the exact same problem as ladmo, or are you having one of the usual issues?

Tony, I checked the usual stuff, but to be sure I might try lifting a pin on the ethernet chip. It seems that bit D5 is stuck: write FFFF, read FFDF. Am I right to assume that D15 is the MSB and D0 the LSB in that notation?

Or is there any way to check ethernet without a drive installed? Hm I havent even tried that!

Lifting the pin fixes the problem. Re-attaching it makes it come back. It's definitely bit D5 in the ethernet chip that burnt out. Looks like others had the same bit fail. Makes me wonder what's going on!

I will try to talk a coworker into replacing the chip. He's much better with fine-pitch soldering than anyone I know. Might need chocolate for a bribe...

Well, there is a happy ending at least in my story! My friend replaced the ethernet chip and now all is well! Cost me $17 for the chip and owing a favor...

I've got a real headscratcher. It appears that I have a bad ethernet chip, but it is not the typical stuck D5 bit that we've seen earlier in this thread. There are several bits stuck high, but D5 appears to be working! In the past it seemed that lifting D5 would allow the other bits to get back in line, but since D5 is working, which one(s) is (are) responsible? Since only the ethernet chip and the IDE bus are 16 bits, it seems that the root cause is either one or both buffer ICs or the ethernet chip. Based on the below bootlog, is there any way to divine which bits to disable on the ethernet chip to get this working?

Forgive me for my ignorance, but why aren't you just completely replacing the ethernet chip? Is it because you don't have a replacement?

Edit: Academic curiosity is always a valid answer for me.

Good question! We've got a few of the chips, but given that it's pretty labor intensive (without a decent hot air rig) I'd rather not go that route unless that's really the problem. It could also be the level shifters which I would probably do first given the ease of replacing, but again I'd really like to narrow it down to which device is at fault.

Data bus bits 8 and 15 (numbering from 0..15) are both stuck.

D8 is definitly stuck LOW ('0'), and D15 is probably stuck HIGH ("1").

I say probably, because there is some contradictory evidence on D15.
So lift D8 (ethernet) first, then try again.

Oh.. and D5 is also stuck LOW. EDIT: mmm.. actually, maybe not.

Have you ever tried ChipQuik? I haven't; I'm just curious about the experiences of those who have, and to suggest looking at it if you've never heard of it.

Thanks! Yes I have tried it and is what I would probably use. It's not ideal and sometimes end up losing some of the unused pads- even with the lower heat involved which I hate (from a cosmetic point of view). Overall it's not a bad solution if not a little messy and expensive. There's also the task of aligning and resoldering with a fine tip iron that followings, which with 100 pins with .5mm pitch is no fun.

I'm beginning to think that the ethernet chip may have been okay. Notice that in my bootlogs up until I started lifting pins, that the ethernet chip is recognized whereas the bootlogs with the bad ethernet chips say "smc_init couldn't find card" near the end of the log. It wasn't until I disabled the pins that this couldn't find card message appeared.

Why if all 16 bits (which seem to be needed to avoid the couldn't find card message)were functional for the ethernet chip did the IDE bus not work? I've verifed that all bits of the bus are connected to the header and tried multiple drives that have been tested good.

Was there a hard disk connected when you captured the above outputs? If not, then connect one, and try again. Otherwise the lines are just floating randomly.

Mmm.. well, your changes earlier seem to have fixed the stuck lines. All of the bits seem capable of changing state now.

So.. I wonder if the control signals are getting to the IDE bus, or if perhaps those are now stuck high/low.

You'll have to probe them individually, I suspect, preferably with a scope or logic analyzer that can trigger on state change.

Mmm musing further on this, we do know that MOST of the control signals must be working, since the ethernet chip does respond, to READs at least.

Dunno about WRITEs.

Okay, so here's the list of IDE control signals in the empeg:

RD (read) obviously not stuck.
WR (write)
BA0,BA1,BA2 (address/register select lines)
IDECS1 (chip select)
IDECS2 (chip select)

That's mostly it. A very short list.
And since the CS4231A is also not responding,
it's most likely the pins shared with that chip.

BA0,BA1 go to both IDE and CS4231A, but not to ethernet (I think).

And the IDECS1/IDECS2 lines go only to IDE,
but they are generated by the same PEEL18CV8
that also generates the CS (Chip Select) for
the CS4231A. Perhaps the PEEL chip has died.

So.. check the lines that are in common between those
two devices (IDE, CS4231A), and see if they toggle
or are just stuck.

Thanks Mark. I haven't gotten to any logic analyzing yet, but I did notice that with the HD removed that the CS4231 appears as normal in the boot log. Simply attaching any drive to the header causes it and the boot process to fail. I wonder if it could still be a bad PEEL? We've got a bunch of them, but unfortunately they are not programmed for that application and would have to be sent out to load the applicable code.

Now I've gotten the IDE bus to work (bad traces), but there is a problem with the I2C bus now. Which apparently configures and controls the DSP because there is no sound. Since the CS4231A fix is in place, I'm guessing the lack of a functioning DSP would kill the fix as well and explain why the CS4231A is also not working.

So it's back to probing around the PEELs and passives to the DSP to see if something has died there.

Edit: I fixed the DSP and CS4231A. For some reason, the DSP reset pin was stuck low. For whatever reason, removing the fix corrected this. I tripled checked that I had it just as Mark did and it was, but anyway all seems well now.
