Tired of not having a clock in my car I have hacked together a clock visualization that works with the v1.02 player.

I based my code on the overlay kernel patch that Kim Salo wrote. Instead of scaling the 32 line display down to 24 lines, I simply block off a region of the display, but only if nothing is currently writing to that area of thie display.

The end result is I now have a clock in the lower left corner of the display when I am in the "Track" information display. If I hit pause or do anything to write to that region the clock disappears.

I took a photo with my digital camera, although it came out blury. If anyone is interested in me creating an easy to use package let me know.

Installation requires both a kernel hack and a usermode daemon that must run before the player.

v1.1 has a clock as one of the time display modes. It also has a full screen clock visual.

I'd definitely be interested in this. It's annoying having to answer the "You paid 1200$ for this thing and it doesn't even have a CLOCK?!?!" question so many times.

I know 1.1 will have a clock, but I don't expect to see 1.1 for at least a few more months, so in the interim it would be nice to have this hack.

If not, I can host them off a directory on the logo site, as this is something I am sure a few people are willing to hack into their empegs without an easy to install package (like myself, who still months after getting the empeg stares at the dash looking for a clock.)

I zipped up the kernel diff, a binary kernel, the usermode daemon, and screenshot and some brieft instructions.

Patch kernel, run usermode timed before running the player and you are good to go.

It's just not as easily accessable as having it right on the info screen, which since there's already a clock in most cars elsewhere, why need it in front all the time.

Both times I just plug in the empeg and that's what it does. Is this a known issue? I'm using the correct com port version of download.exe.

Also, I just attempted to use Tony's upload tool (which appears to be similar to the download tool. Different name tho, and it says everything is transferred fine, but the system does not load.

What all did you compile into the kernel? Just the overlay patch, or also the displayserver and volume adjustment patches as well?

In attempting this I did not overlay anything. This is upgrading from a totally fresh kernel to the kernel to get the time hack.

I was asking Kit about the kernel to see if I need to recompile mine to keep all my other goodies on my empeg. With your particular problem, I'm not sure what happened. Does reapplying the normal empeg upgrade file resolve the problem?

Oops, *feels like an idiot*. Yeah a upgrade to the dev kernel fixes the issue.

Your TZ is set bogusly. Somehow, set TZ to GMT, and it should sort its life out. And yes, I do mean GMT -- even if you're not on that meridien. Or possibly, I mean UTC. I can't recall what Unix calls it.

UTC is the more recently-standardised name for what the rest of the real world calls GMT . Both are accepted so long as they exist in your TZ list.

Don't ask me where to find that in Linux; it is usually associated with global locale data somewhere, so maybe in /etc.

Version 1.02 and earlier of the player software, get confused about timezones (I don't know quite why). The forthcoming ersion 1.1 fixes this.

That's precisely what I'm confused about. It's meant to use UTC, on the basis that this makes the player behave as if it didn't know about timezones at all (like most stereos). An unpleasant wander through the glibc sources showed that, if TZ isn't explicitly set, the default is a path relative to where the library was installed. As the player is cross-compiled from an x86 Linux box, the path refers to a directory on our compile server which doesn't exist on the player itself. Hence it should remain stuck in UTC. But it somehow doesn't.

/home/empeg/295/arm-empeg-linux/share/zoneinfo appears to be where v1.02 player is looking for zoneinformation. In any case I've attached a binary "date" command that can be used to set the clock in UTC without using the player.

This should hold people over until 1.1.

I redownloaded the file, to make sure it isn't a corrupt download. The file came in a zip file, and I reuploaded it twice, once using download.exe and upload.exe. Both had the exact same error on boot up as previously stated. Will my mk2a (Rio Car) make any difference? I wouldn't think it should, only 4 more MB of Ram.

I have no idea what's going wrong. In another thread, I got a hint that it might be file-name related. Try naming the file something simple like "123.abc" and see if that fixes it?

Tony, I attempted to do just zimage and abc.123 and still get the same thing happening. If I knew how to recompile the kernel I would do that, but alas I dont. And for some reason trying to reflash the kernel isn't working and I can't figure out why.

Try downloading a differnet kernel, like the one contained here. If they all give you the same problems, that will at least elliminate the possibility of the time kernel being bad for you.

(It worked fine here for me, after fixing my broken init for a while :-)

I don't realy need it as I have a clock in the dash but well done, I'm sure several people will be happy to have a clock back.

One thing.. I don't think this would affect it, but I thought I would bring it up. I'm doing all this from a Win NT box without administrator access. Do you think that may affect the transfer or anything? I haven't yet attempted this from my home box, however I will when I get home.

At this point, I'd recommend running the empeg through a self test. Hit Ctrl-T right when you plug it in to put it into test mode. See what happens there.

Ah. I think I know what this *may* be. It looks like the kernel you have there does not have the correct memory mappings for the issue 9 rio player (ie, 16MB in one bank - the issue 7 has 12MB in 3 banks of 4MB).

The v1.02 kernel had this support added (vs the v1.01 which didn't have it). Is someone building kernels from old source?

I think the other kernels floating around may be in the same boat. I'll recompile an overlay kernel tonight.

Is Tony vacationing or something?!

Let's assume you work from Windows.

- (Since you can load kernels, your serial connection is obviously wokring)
- Load development kernel
- Make Hyperterm connection for empeg; specify direct to COMn (whichever you use), 115200 bps, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, no handshaking (flow control); optionally specify that the terminal is ANSI, backspace key sends ctrl-h, arrow keys send terminal sequences. (Everything is there in Hyperterminal menus, just hunt arround a bit.)
- While empeg is playing press ctrl-c; this should stop the player and get you a shell prompt (something like 'empeg:/empeg/bin#').
- Type 'rw;rwm' (without quotes, but with semicolon); this will take a minute or two, and perhaps you will get warnings about mounting unchecked fs; ignore them.
- When the prompt returns, go to target directory (hint: cd works like in DOS, except that delimiters are '/', rather than '\'; cd alone returns you to home directory, rather than printing the current one; use pwd instead; use ls -al in place of dir).
- Type rz; a cryptic line will be printed; ignore it.
- From Hyperterm transfer menu send the file you want (chose Zmodem as protocol - it should be the default).
- Repeate the last three steps as necessary.
- Type 'ro;rom;exit' (again no qoutes, but with semicolons); this should restrt the player.

Yes I'm using Windoze & have sucessfully upload the VolAdj kernel and files using aka dummys intructions for Picker VolAdj provided by Tony, most of what you mention is done similiarly there. I was however missing how one moves files to various directories. Thanks loads, I should have stuck it out longer w/Red Hat when I tried it last year. Who knew I would buy a music player that used it.
I'll try it & see what happens.

If you by chance didn't move (with cd) to the correct directory
before uploading the file(s), you can use the mv command.

Like this:

mv myfile /drive0/var/

This will move the file myfile from wherever you currently are to the
directory /drive0/var/. You can copy (cp) or move a file from
anywhere to anywhere else. Remember that it is all one big filesystem
tree even if there are more than one partition/drive, and that you can
use full filenames (from the root: /drive0/var/myfile) or relative
filenames (let's say you're in /drive0; then you can use var/myfile ,
or if you're in /drive0/var/subdir - then you can use ../myfile)

Haven't played with this yet, but if a directory isn't there, then
just create it: mkdir fonts while in the lib directory
(or give the full path mkdir /empeg/lib/fonts from anywhere)

OK I did find the dir just going directly to it, but found no dir called sbin/init my ? is should it be there for Kits instructions made no mention of making one if he's using the same player I am shouldn't it be there as in his?

/sbin/init isn't a directory but a file. This is the file that decides
what is done when the empeg boots. The sbin/init you mention (note the
lack of leading /) is it located in some subdirectory or straight in
the root (/) ?

timed.c is a source file (the humanly readable code) and it shouldn't
be necessary to upload that.


OK, downloaded the package: /sbin/init is normally a binary file that
starts the player. For those that have displayserver or other neat
stuff installed this is changed to a shell script (human readable text
file, much like a .bat file in Windows). It is into this file you need
to enter a command to start timed before starting the player.

Here's how my /sbin/init looks, and where I'd put the command to start
timed if I were to install it:

As the instructions say, if you still have a binary /sbin/init, you

A nitpicking detail: replacing the last line with
exec /sbin/init.binary

Actually I read that part wrong it is as you say NOT a dir as I thought but something I am to add to as I read it again. I don't have display server installed, only recently have I successfully installed the 'Picker'& 'AdjVol' but then Tony's instructions were very thorough w/it.

Then /sbin/init is already a textfil. You should have a copy of it
somewhere on your disk. Then you can edit it there and reupload - make
sure to save it in unix format! Or you can upload a small text editor
and edit in place. That was discussed about a week ago, here.
I think the (to be) /sbin/init file is called "testinit" in the
VolAdj/Picker package, and testinit.sh copies/renames it to /sbin/init.

I just compiled a new binary version of the kernel against the v1.03-beta3 patches. This binary kernel only contains the clock overlay patch and no other third party modifications.

This should resolve the issues people were having with the RioCar versions of the player. I'm currently running this alongside the v1.03-beta3 player without any trouble. timed still needs to be cleaned so that it won't pop up as it currently does with some visualizations.

This includes painting the ceilings, and ripping out all the carpet and applying sealer to all the floors (previous homeowner had pets, don't ask). Not to mention all the furniture moving, disassembly, prep work, re-assembly, cleanup...

Well I never did get it running on my machine the text editor thing stopped me, I was doing pretty good (for myself) until I had to go edit (Unix) text type stuff. Yes if I can merely upload it to the right directories or follow step by step dummy instructions, I can do it, but beyond that I don't seem to have the patience like I used to. However I will read up onit, w/the realization that 1.1 will be here before I'll get clkvis on my empeg.

Here are the files needed for an editor on the empeg:

The ae binary is attached to this post, and the /etc/ae.rc file is attached to this one.

You also need the libslang library; Frank has put a lot if the libs online here, just put it in /lib/ .
Get the libslang.so.1 file (it is the same as the libslang.so.1.3.9, but ae looks for ...so.1)
or if you get the ..so.1.3.9 file, create a symlink in /lib, like this
ln -s /lib/libslang.so.1.3.9 /lib/libslang.so.1

I just wanted to thank both Michael and Dragi for their excellent directions on how to get this clock working. I sat here long enough to read the post saying that they needed to re-do the init file and then it worked for some reason. I tried it after about an hour and a half of thinking I did something else wrong and that was the problem. Very weird!

This board is the greatest! Any chance of getting a 24 hour display?

I changed the timed file as you said and it worked fine last night. This morning, I put the player in the car and the clock display was gone. Then when I got to work, it's not there in home mode, either. I can't check anything until I get home, but does anyone have any ideas as to what happened (i.e. What I screwed up? ) I thought that was only going to happen when I upgraded the software.

I just checked everything out at home. The timed file is there, it's got the rwx permissions, and the init is there. For kicks, I did the cat again on the init file and viola'... the clock reappeared. I unplugged the player and left it off for a few minutes and rebooted it to see if that did anything to make the clock disappear again, but nothing changed... the clock is still there. I plugged it into the car to see if it would disappear and it was still there. Back in the house... still there.

I'm lost! I'm just going to have to wait until tomorrow morning on the drive to work and see if the clock is still there, but this is very perplexing!

I definitly agree with Tony, forgetting a "rom" or "sync" command definitly can cause this. Happened to me a few times when I forst started working on my Mark 1.

Of course right now my clock is not visible either after an upgrade, and last night I realised why, I forgot the fonts. So it is sitting there ticking, but not visible :-)

The only thing left is the "fuzzy clock" that KDE has. =] You can define a fuzzy level. High fuzziness would make today "Middle of week" and low fuzziness being "Twenty five past nine".. Put that on my 1.1 wishlist heh.
