Hey...I am working on a prototype for a device that will read mp3's directly from a standard 10 gig ibm hard drive and convert it to a bit stream that is fed into an mp3 decoder processor..... its a cheap, easy to build mp3 player for a car.... BUT I CANT FIND A DECODER!!!....has anyone seen any? i'd perfer DIP package but surface mount is ok too...

You are in the wrong forum for this...

Try http://www.mp3kit.com for a product similar to what you are designing.

Texas Instruments might make what you are looking for.

Wrong forum, yes, and still not easy to make - but a SGS-Thompson (www.st.com) sta013 or a Micronas intermetall (www.intermetall.de) mas3507d is what you're after.

Hm, interesting device... Much cheaper than empeg, but apparently taking shorcuts almost everywhere - e.g. their shock mounting consists of advice to 'put anything soft under the disk', and interfacing to car stereo is bound to amuse our audiophiles here.

Howerer, as the unit is quite usefull for tasks such as making your music available in the office, the huge price difference could make it quite a competition for empeg outside enthusiast market segment.

Cheers!

Actually *finding* your music on that unit must be a bit of a challenge, though!

Yep. Here's a quote:

"I make frequent long trips by car and, you got it, the unit comes along. I connect it to a cassette adapter which plugs into my car stereo, the sound, once again, is f a n t a s t i c !"

I suspect that anyone who thinks a 3507 decoder driving a low-end DAC and a tape adaptor input sounds "fantastic" would pass out when hearing an empeg driving 4v amps directly... ;)
