According to this FAQ entry, the last five digits of the player's serial number are a production sequence number.

Assuming the knob who wrote the FAQ is correct (and frankly I'm having my doubts about that guy's reliability), does that mean that my friend Tod's "over-4000" sequence number really means that more than 4000 Mk2/2a players were actually made?

I thought it was only about 3000 players total including Mk1's.

So who's got the highest serial number so far?

We only *asked* them to make 4000!

I suspect that they may have skipped some numbers for whatever reason. The mk1 serial numbering didn't affect the mk2 ones; 0600.00004 was the first unit which went to consumers (I have 03, rob has 01 and I think Steve had 02... these are ones I hand assembled (not the PCBs, the casing) to show the factory how to do it.

I don't know, but it did come back in for a HDD upgrade (or maybe a fix for the PSU?) recently-ish. I waved it round the office at the time, as it was the first customer mk2 ever to ship...

It was probably a Mark 1 owner, since the existing owners got the first dibs on the new units. It also shipped with the dark blue faceplates that were later replaced, and also had beta software on it. I remeber getting my e-mail from Rob about ordering as part of this minibatch, but it came right at the time I was let go from my past job. I was queue position 1640, and serial number 359. (I had a high serial number due to forgetting I ordered for a few months, and not getting the credit card problem e-mail

I was registered 363 or something and got a mk1 around that mark too; I now have 060000047. Isn't 060000004 PaulH or someone?

Ok, I've got # 040103216

Why don't we make a list, with name and sn, and put it into the riocar.org website?

There is already one at http://www.empeg.mars.org that's been there for years. Hardly anyone has used it. The long-term goal is to transfer its data and functionality to riocar.org.

Yes, I have registered my emepg there since last year, and I have just done the same with my second one, but that's exactly what I meant, it would make more sense to have it in riocar.org.

You have spare time, do you not Tony

Anyway, I think a "registration" database will be great. What if yours gets stolen then someone reregisters it later... What about finding out who bought more, Europe vs US vs Aussie... or finding out who lives near you for the joy of gawking at another install.. imagine the possbilities

I have the same problem - I originally had number 128-10Gb, then sold it to my brother and got a more recent 20Gb (3000ish,can't remember right now), needed some spare cash so did a swap with my brother and now he's managed to get a 60Gb in the Christmas free-for-all so I'm back with the 20Gb and the 10Gb is our joint spare:)

But there is no change details facility on the database:(

I just received my unit today. I ordered a 20GB model from the SB eStore Saturday 1-19-02. It is serial number 030102864, which seems like a low number compared to some of the others here.

Can't wait to install, but I gotta wait till the weekend.

Actually, Rob has serial number 1 of the mk2s. Serial number 1 of the mk1s was owned by Dean (bbs member) but we did an upgrade deal to a mk2 and got mk1 serial number 00001 back for our display cabinet

Yay, my 30Gb arrived at my doorstep in new zealand today from some nice ebayer that sold to me at cost.

Didn't have to pay sales tax either! (GST = 12.5%) Makes a nice wee saving over buying from the internation store. Made up for all the stress when i saw the international store had sold out

Serial number is blank, but on the bottom of the unit is a white sticker saying 040104157. Not as flash looking as the Mk1 serial numbers. But the whole packaging experience was much more mainstream than the mk1 experience.
