I emailed the seller of the tuner, asking if I had guessed right about what transpired in the auction, and here is his reply:

Doug,

You were right... I put in the bid of $333.33, saw that it would probably not stand up and decided to up my bid since I would not be able to be online when the auction ended. My max bid was $444.44.

Gotta just love ebay! Although I have been disappointed over the past month that nobody on ebay is selling a rear windshield wiper motor for a Taurus station wagon. Sheesh, you'd think even the local K-Mart store would have those...

I'm back from vacation, and I must admit I am very surprised by the turnout. The market for these tuners are insane. I had some e-mails begging to end the auction early, someone offered to bid $5000 on it, so that I could sell the tuner under the table for less, etc.

If someone did bid $5000 for it, under auction rules, are they not entereing a legally binding contract to purchase it for that?

I wonder if it would stand up in court.
