I have to say I'm very unimpressed by this. It's like being back in kindergarten.

It's back on again, and I promise not to do it again (but feel free to mirror if that makes anyone feel better).

Basically, my abuse tolerance level got exceeded briefly, so I briefly pulled the site to take time to consider whether to continue.

But hacking this nice little box is too much fun to give up, so I might as well continue making the results available here, since I'd being doing it anyway for myself.

But please remember, this is part-time, spare-time, best-effort. Unlike the car player, nobody paid me to produce Hijack. Sure I hack Linux for a living, but I don't draw a salary from the Hijack stuff (though thanks to some of you, it has generated some small change).

I think I'll cash in on the train here and mention that the misgivings and commentary by one remarkable moron should not be taken as a view of the community as a whole. I, for one, am profoundly impressed at the amount of time and effort you have put into this project that has no real financial gain for you, and presents you only with the satisfaction of a job well done.

I sincerely hope that you will reconsider and continue your development, for I believe that the hijack kernel is very nearly at the core of this international aftermarket development team we've got assembled here. Any failure to continue along its vein by some dedicated indivdual or driver will probably result in the stagnation of this community, and ultimately, the stagnation of development at all. After all, any hack I install must be compatable with the existing hijack kernel, otherwise I won't install it.

Without this integration and development efforts that you have willingly contributed in the past, I fear that not only the community will be at a loss for a next logical step, but will also have lost an invaluable contributor.

Whatever your decision, thank you kindly for your efforts in the past to establish and troubleshoot this fantastic piece of work.

I think all the matter was created by misunderstandings: the guy you named 'moron' has not offended Mark, nor told him that his work was bad. He has pointed out some lack, or some tweaks to fix up, like others do normally. Perhaps Mark has misunderstood some advice, then an escalation of 'bad mood' has come out and here it is... the community is all against Bruno.

I don't want to be on a side... I don't see any bad from Bruno in his post, only normal suggestions & advice of which Mark could take care or not.

I don't know why all this dust is coming over.

mlord, I'd like to say thank you for your continuing hacking and putting the updates back up I enjoy watching the Empeg/Rio grow with the new ideas. I know that it's hard to enjoy working on something when a few try to invalidate it because of a flaw or should I say what they believe is a flaw. Thanks again for the incredible work (I know I couldn’t do it)

To everyone please lets be mature here I used to frequent another bbs/forum for MP3 cars that got real old because many started flaming and cutting each others ideas down because they were different.

Just as an official statement on this, I will never put anything on RioCar.org without the author having full control of it. All logos, photo galleries, links, etc can be deleted by the person who upload them either by doing it via the site if possible, or by e-mailing me via the admin link at the bottom of all pages.

Not even that. I'm sure it's been long days for Mark and he probably took what I wrote too much to heart. It surely wasn't intended as such. And to top it off, people-a-plenty thought it was their "duty" to jump in and really stir things up (obviously not having read the complete thread or other threads which I was parodying). I didn't appreciate the comments from Mark to my first fairly innocent message, but I was still fine (I should have sent him the reply in private in retrospect). I really didn't appreciate the crap I saw afterwards from some unnamed others.

Tony didn't miss a thing. Mostly boring from behind the scenes. I was still emailing Mark at the same time.

I don't think that anybody did any thing wrong by sticking up for Mark and letting him know that 99.9999% of us appreciate what he is doing for everyone. Bruno, you are honestly and sincerely one of my favorite members on this board. You have helped me out in many ways. Whether it be through PM'ing me tips or just general "informative" posts that I've read and re-read. And you've had me cracking up and the seams with a joke or two. However, in the last few weeks it seemed you were coming across a little harsh at times. Some people thought you were going beyond speaking your mind and instead thought you were picking fights on every topic from cars, game controllers, mp3 software, user interfaces, the English language, fonts, etc, etc. I didn't pipe in like some of the others because I figured at the very least I was not doing a good job of translating text on my screne as good natured humor - or possibly that some outside force in your life had you being "not quite yourself." It's not any of my business and I never bothered posting about it because I knew that you are a good guy. But please don't partially blame it on Mark "having a long day" or get upset for people sticking up for him. Yeah, a few of the post went a touch too far and it seemed a post or two was writen without having read all of the thread. Or maybe you too it too much to heart. Besides, you and I and bunch of others jumped right in the second we thought that some of the new "closeout prices" members were being ungreatful to the empeg team. In the end, I just followed the lead of Tony and others and just kept my mouth shut - which is _maybe_ what I should be doing now....

I just have to ask this... What difference does it make how much one paid for their empeg vs the quality of their posts? I for one am one of the "closeout price guys". That doesn't mean I am less intelligent than any other. It just means that when my number came up for my mark 1 I was simply too poor to buy one at the time. When the proce dropped, you're damn right I snatched one. I understand your logic that since I paid less, it means less, but let me tell you, my empeg dropped 2 feet to the floor the other day, and my heart skipped a beat more than when my g/f thought she was pregnant. I guess the thing that irks me is the somewhat elitist attitude about how much one paid. Makes no sense to me.

I don't think it's how much you paid per say, rather how much you were willing to pay. Actually signing up for the Mark 1 and waiting in queue meant that you understood the concept, the price, and the quality. On the other side of that are the people who bashed it from day one for price, and other things. Those people generally bashed it on Slashdot and other places, unaware of this BBS because they didn't take the time to look.

The firesale introduced some of that community here for two reasons. Some thought that $200 was worth it, but at the edge. And others found the BBS mainly due to the massive increase in size since mid 1999.

And there are also always exceptions to the rule.

Boggle... How could ANYONE think $200 is barely worth it... I'd have gladly paid the 1.5-2k if I HAD it (in fact, I considered a loan). I mean jeeezum, I paid close to $600 for my CD player 8 years ago... And this SOOOOO outdoes that. Anyway, sorry for posting just because I got miffed, it just hit me funny...

Exactly. That's why you are *not* one of the (small) clueless crowd Brad was refering to. And even those who are either 'get it' quite quickly or leave. I think the board is back to its original quality (if with somewhat higher volume of repeated questions, but that's unavoidable and, after all, that's why the board is here in the first place).

I for one must say your efforts with Hijack are extremely well appriciated, if anyone gives you a hard time on here they will loose my respect.

You must put in a tremendous effort - and for little return - people should be thankfull and not keep criticising, that's what's wrong with the world today.

See, misinterpreting again. I wasn't blaming anything, not even partially, on Mark. All I said was that I did not appreciate how Mark replied to my one message - that's the only thing that prompted the reply Mark so kindly linked the Hijack page to. That has nothing to do with what anyone else wrote.

No one needed to jump to Mark's defence because there was no attack to begin with. At least some people understood that, because I received PM mentioning specifically that.

Now... Jumping on close-out price people. I can remember one thread that got pretty long, but it obviously wasn't anything about how much money someone spent on the player. Many people have mentioned how the board has ballooned since December and it's undergone some growing pains. Besides, I don't remember picking on anyone. Now the stuff about the English language.... That was just Bitt picking on everyone else. And he can more than hold his own in that regard. Damn him.

Now I'm going to email Mark about something he can do next month in Hijack to freak everyone out...

You are right - it doesn't make any differance what anyone paid for it. Basically, I was refering to a time period in late December when this board got swamped with many new members that fit that description. Most of them were like you - they always loved the empeg from afar - and thought it was worth the money - yet simply couldn't afford it. I myself was that way for a long time. Because of this, I was lucky enough to get that $1299 Mk2 that had a 12GB drive (compared to others who paid even more for a Mk1 with a smaller drive at an earlier date). So, because I've only been on the board for just over a year, compared to other members, I'm a newbie too.

Yet, this December, there were a handful who's only reason that they didn't buy the empeg at an earlier date was because they "didn't get it" - meaning that they really had no idea what this thing is capable of and thought there were cheaper - equally equiped options. So, those buyers got their RioCars at $199 and immediately started complaining about them. Some of us took offense to that (and were maybe a bit envious of the deal they got! ) and some heated debates broke out. Like was stated, those people either eventually found out what the empeg _really_ was and grew to fully appreciate it - or they got bored and left.

I for one (and I think most will agree) think that the forum is a better place because of the price drop. We've got tons of new members that have contributed idea, boot logos, 3rd party programs - you name it! This place has really come alive in the last 3 months.

Drakino did a better job explaining it than I can at this late hour - so I'll leave it at that.
