That, or for a rubber bumper that fits into a hole in the back of the DIN bay (see attachment)

Yes, I've used the screw hole for both things at different times. Sometimes for the rubber bumper (for instance on VWs) and sometimes for a custom-hacked back-strap.

On cars where the front connection is bendy-tabs only, having the rear support point is crucial to making the install solid and stable.
