Hugo and I have decided to release the domains EMPEGHOME.NET, EMPEGHOME.COM, EMPEGCAR.NET and EMPEGCAR.COM.

If you are interesting in getting these domains - at no cost except the registrar fee - please reply to this message stating which domain(s) you would like and what you would do with them. The most interesting suggestions posted by next Friday (24th May) will get the domains. Hugo's decision will be final.

Anybody wanting these domains but have no where to host can use my shared server at no cost as long as the bandwidth use is not too high.

Just my small way of saying thanks to the group, anybody interested drop me a line when Hugo has made his mind up.

Cheers
Cris.

Great idea...

I use http://www.stargate.com for my registrations - they're cheap and appear to be reliable.

I've used directNIC.com for years.. only $15 a year.

The BBS could use a more friendly domain. (that works with the "www")

I also do hosting, both for the domain name and web space. If Cristian doesn't do dns hosting, i'm more than willing to host the names at no charge for the community.

I like the sound of that one.
How about we use the rest of the names for pr0n sites?
Installs, logos, other images of course...
Maybe even centralising all the work that people are doing ala sourceforge.net as it seems to be a little messy at the moment and takes a while to track everything down. eg. imagepans, boot logo sites, apps to run under hijack etc.

I happen to like the existing content where it is, and would hope these domains just become aliases to our existing sites. I wouldn't want to see Hijack info or the FAQ split off to a separate site.

I'd love to see the various 3rd party software in cvs on sourceforge, but the reality is that it is up to the creators of the software, and a separate domain name for that isn't really necessary - The links at the top of this forum would be enough.

Well. How about using empeghome.net or empeghome.com addresses as a ml.org style thing? Where I could have trevor.empeghome.net which resolves to 123.123.123.123 etc... or it could an entire subdomain could be delegated to another DNS server. Would anybody find this useful?

Not sure about dynamic IPs though...

Dynamic IP's can be done in a similar manner to dyndns.org, where the user would run a client to update the DNS entry upon connection to the Internet. That stuff don't come for free, but I think it's a cool idea.

Yep. I know about that, it's just I'm wondering how to implement it without having huge problems

I was thinking of going low-tech and just editing the DNS files by hand... But then you'd have to wait for me to get around to doing it which is why there is a problem with dynamic IPs

We're keeping geek.empeg.com but I plan to point it at riocar.org if Tom is cool with that. The geek site itself is defunct since I moved all the images over to riocar.org.

I'm confused as to why this would be useful... The empeg almost no security, so pointing DNS entrys to them might not be a great idea. But then, I guess if you didn't publish a list of entrys people would have to know what they were looking for. Obviously someone would need to write a dynamic DNS client that would run on the empeg for this to be feasable because hand updatind DNS entrys is for hosts.txt files.

It occurs to me now that you might not have been planning on pointing the entrys to empegs but personal empeg sites? I guess that could be useful, but now I've almost convinced myself that I want a dns entry to my empeg.

LOL. Perhaps Mark could embed an empegised gnutella into Hijack so we could really go to town.

Well.. Lets see... Assuming the average size of an empeg is 20GB and we've got about 4000 of them... That's about 75TB of music! Anybody want to make something that can index that much stuff? The 8-16MB in a empeg is a bit small for that...

All (and I mean all) ethics aside, having a way to browse other people's empegs and listen to files off them all from the empeg interface would be a really cool feature. It'd quite convenient and (hopefully) legal for us multi-empeg owners.

On a more practical note I don't think the RIAA would really make too much of a fuss if people had DNS entrys pointing to their own empegs. Activly encouraging people to share might, but it's perfectly valid to want a dynamic hostname for your empeg whenever you plug it in. Does hijack do a password thing yet?

If you made your empeg's files publicly available on the internet, the RIAA is going to be the least of your worries. You would have all of the same problems that a warez/MP3 FTP site would have. I recommend against trying this unless you've got experience running that kind of site.

Actually, that just occured to me. We make a dynamic IP addresses for our empegs. That way when we;re at work, we could http: to a random user's empeg, and stream some music.. :>

(FTR, For domain name reg, I use registerfly.com. They're like $9.99 for a new name, and $7.99 for a transfer. Used them for a year now, no problems.)

It would be cool if someone knew how to code up some kind of private gnutella network client that would work on the empeg.

My favorite domain registrar is GoDaddy.com they are $8.95 USD/yr and have been great to work with!

Goofy name, but the service is outstanding. YMMV.

That stuff don't come for free? Yes it does! It is a part of the standard BIND (Or at least it was in 1997 whin I last looked at it.) Do a dejanews-search for my name in the *mail* and *bind* newsgroups. I wrote a quick HOWTO summer of 1997 (I think it was)

So you're saying that it's not necessary to pay someone to register a domain name for you? A simple piece of code can insert your domain into the DNS "canon" and it'll stick?

I think he means you don't need to pay for ml.org/dyndns.org services. BIND does allow you to remotely update entries in the DNS if you send it the correctly formatted command.

Windows tries to do update the DNS if you've got the "Register this connection in the DNS" option checked. This is a real pain because it's checked by default and I get millions of attempts by peoples Windows 2K/XP installation. I happen to also maintain the servers for home.org and unfortunately people like to use it as a pretend domain for their local networks. *grrr*

>You would have all of the same problems that a warez/MP3 FTP site would have.

What if it was limited to empeg owners? i.e. it was coded into Hijack, where your empeg connects to someone's else empeg, streams/downloads, and then optionally passes the stream on to you to listen? Hijack would do some challenge/response stuff to make sure that you were talking to another empeg.

...and put a bit of encryption in it so that only people that were 'licensed' could access the empegs. Then we'd be covered by the DMCA.

You have to pay to change the "first level domain" fror instance
empegcar.com
But it is free to register "second-level domains" like
jane.empegcar.com or hugo.empegcar.com

Close, but not quite.

Top level domains are the .com's and .net's etc...
Second level domains would be the empeg in empeg.com

What you're talking about is a host name.
in loren.empeg.com, loren is the hostname, empeg is the second level domain, and .com is the top level domain. Host names don't have to be registered at all, as they are controlled on the host's dns server.

www.jane.empegcar.com -> www is the hostname, jane is the third level domain, which is also set'able by Dynamic DNS.

When using dynamic DNS, hostnames also have to be registered, but if you run the DNS server yourself, it is free, and you do it yourself. Some places may charge you money to do change all NS settings.

My problem is finding a secure and reliable way of letting people change it remotely. A passworded web interface would probably be best. I don't really want to accept dynamic DNS requests directly via BIND.

This is getting really complicated now

http://www.ddts.org/ has some software that'll run on Linux. I don't know how easy it is to configure the server, and I'm not sure that there's a client for anything other than Linux, but it does at least make a pretense at security.

Well, I'm guessing Mark Lord would, but (1) he might not have the time, and (2) he might not "agree" with the idea.

Technically, I could probably do it, but I'm not that familiar with Linuxy programming, so it might take a while. It wouldn't actually have to be in the kernel, right? Just a little userland app. Can Hijack auto-launch programs at startup?
