Just in case there is anyone that doesn't know already real jukebox is an unusable pile of crap.
I wanted to put some more music on the Riot today tried to run jukebox it wouldn't load. I tried to reinstall it for about a hour and have given up. I guess I can't put anything new on the riot.
Why couldn't they just use emplode. Would it have been too simple and user friendly.

The only thing worse than realplayer is the windows version of quicktime, as far as I'm concerned... At one point when installing quicktime there was no way to not have it take over any file type it supported (Such as midis... wtf?) You could uncheck the box to your hearts content, but it didn't make a difference... Being someone who's anal about file associations, this pissed me off to no end.
I have to put up with reallayer for southpark, so I do... Is there any way to play real video in win media player?

The only thing I've heard of is a plugin for WinAmp, but you still have to have RealPlayer installed for the plugin to work.

The sad thing is that Real Jukebox had real promise (pun not intentional). It was the first piece of software I remember that allowed you to rip while listening to a CD, which was very nice. I used it for that reason for a good while until I noticed the propensity it had for encoding and/or ripping really poorly. But, as with all Real software, they seem much more interested in making it look pretty (with dubious results) than in actually making it work well.

Spyware
I'm sure you already know but in the name of 'decent' software and for the benefit of those who haven't already heard of it, can I just mention AD-Aware?

I don't know if RealSh*tbox is considered to be spyware by Ad Aware. Is it?
There are some applications which, at runtime, gather and report data on their users, but they arent't overtly pieces of terminate-and-stay-resident adware like Cydoor. I would have figured that Real wasn't overt TSR adware, it was just a privacy-invading app like the WindowsXP registration app.
Ad Aware is a fantastic piece of software regardless, though, and everyone should use it.

I have never heard of it being spyware I just hate it because it is ungodly over complicated to use due to real trying to make it easy to use for novices. Also it wants to play everything and take over your computer but all the media players do that.

I'd skipped over this thread until last night.
I had to install Jukebox on my mp3 server machine so my girlfriend could load up song to her Riot a few months back. I don't use that machine much... it generally just sits there serving mp3s. Last night i popped in a CD to copy from a friend and Real ONE JukeCRAPbox took over and started freaking out, indexing, backing up some database i'd never seen, and on and on. I was beyond pissed. That program takes WAY WAY too much control over so many things. Not only that, but i went to re-install the Rio Reciever software so i could try out on of the new modified .arf files, and when it reindexed my drive, the Reciever software also imported the Real Jukebox databases... whatever the hell those are.
ROB.. PLEASE tell me there will be another way to load stuff on the Riot SOON so i can get this evil piece of software off my machine!!

Can someone explain the reasoning that went behind using Real software for the Rio products? What do they get from this deal? To have the empeg team at their software-creating disposal and not use them is a crime!
Then again, Real software should be criminal too. It took me forever to change all the associations in my office's XP machine from Real to whatever else, and even then the icons wouldn't change. ARGH!

You can stop the Receiver from indexing your RJ database by unregistering the import DLL:
regsvr32 /u realprv.dll
from in the C:\Program Files\Audio Receiver directory ought to do it.

This is sort of on the same subject: The day the BBC started streaming some of my favorite programmes, the site told me I needed a software upgrade and downloaded the latest Real player.
the programme has taken over the computer like the egg plant that eat Chicago and pops up un-asked all over the place. can I do anything to stop this or can I use other software?
I have no other use for the wretched thing!

I'm glad you posted that because, when I wrote it, I couldn't remember where the phrase came from. was it a record in the 60's?

hehe, I don't know what your reference was to, but mine was Little Shop of Horrors But that wasn't quite an eggplant and I have no idea if it was Chicago.

Here's what I did: From the Tools menu, choose Preferences. In "On startup display" choose "Player only". Open the "Connection" tree on the left and click on "Internet Settings". Untick everything that says "send", "enable", or "allow". Tick "Only perform automatic services when RealOne Player is in use" (there isn't a button for "Don't perform them at all").
Then click on "Media Types" on the left and untick every media type that doesn't actually start with the word "Real". Most of them should probably be opening with Winamp, or you could use Sonique. This will take a while as there are lots of media types in here.
If that message centre crap pops up, choose Options->Personalise Message Centre and there are one or two things you can turn off (but you can't turn off Software Updates). There's more stuff to turn off in Options->Delivery Preferences (though you can't tell it to never check, you can tell it to check "once or twice a month").
This doesn't completely de-fang the eggplant, but it's as near to sensible behaviour as it's possible to configure it for.

I find that these settings don't stick though. I make the settings and all is fine for a while and then all of a sudden the bloody thing starts offering to help me download things again...

Mine's mute until I start it. I don't remember if I used the same steps Peter suggested, but I do remember that it took about three or four times setting it before it ``took''.

Someobody remind me to post that in the FAQ forum over on the Receiver BBS...
