Looks nice, but it's pretty much a glorified built it yourself PC. I doubt those 3.5" drives are shock tested.

It looks good in those pictures, but I'll bet it's more unreadable in the sunlight than the empeg's red lens is.

When i first got my empeg mark1, i wanted to remove the display and mount it in my dash, and put the player under my seat. In my passat the heating vents heat up the player quite a bit (they are right above the player and leak a bit i think), doesn't matter now cause my car doesn't have a tranny. But this screen would be great as a secondary display for the empeg. At least in my opinion.

Perhaps this link might be a bit irrelavent in light of the last update to that page was 2-Sep-01. Prior to that progress was fairly active, and now silence. Hmmm.

It does say ``All CAVE web effort has been moved to the private development web site until product release.'' at the top.

Depends on the type of LCD. If they use a sidelight and reflective LCD, it will look best in direct sunlight, just like the Game Boy Advance, Sony PDA or Compaq iPaq PDA.

Neet project, and I hope it gets somewhere one day. Some of us only bought one backup unit

Bear in mind that this thing seems to be based on a beefed-up 8051 (awful processor), and uses a dedicated MP3 decoded chip. So, no Ogg Vorbis or WMA playback.

Hmm. Touch screens seem like a good idea, but for a car product, you really need tactile feedback, e.g. BUTTONS. Having to know exactly where the buttons are on the screen (or worse, looking down at it while driving) is a serious drawback. Give me buttons any day over a touch screen.

It's pretty, though.

That looks pretty cool, but when i think of CAVE I think of this http://www.sara.nl/Customer/vr_nieuw/facilities/cave/ CAVE which is much, much cooler IMHO

yeah, as I said, it's pretty, and the album cover bit is a nice touch. Writing a hijack app to display album covers would be quite trivial, except I don't think a 32h by 32w by 2bpp album cover is going to be all that exciting.

No, but doing it with empan would be interesting...Get the current FID, extract the image tag (ID3v2) and pass it to empan for conversion and display

Actually, the optrex display was one of the ones we considered for the mk3 empeg - but it has an on-board controller, so refresh speeds aren't great and it was something like $150 even 1000-off! The colours are a bit washed out, too - but we couldn't source anything like that nice TFT in the new Sony head units
