Since the last sync failed, there's no valid database on the drive. The player notices this and builds the database from scratch as it starts - but can't save to disc (drives mounted read-only). You need to make another sync with emplode, so that a valid database can be written to disk.

Oh yeah, FAQ

No, it shouldn't matter what computer you do the sync from, as it only looks at what's on the player...

If you've made multiple, succesful, syncs and the problem remains, I'd suggest trying the procedure described in the FAQ pointed to above...

ok i tried the procedure described in the FAQ but it still doesn't work! if i'm going to connect via hyperterminal i got the following messages after plugin the power to the empeg:

for example:
hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=1165939, sector=99961
9
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:04 (hda), sector 999619
hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=1165941, sector=99962
1
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:04 (hda), sector 999621
hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=1165943, sector=99962
3
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:04 (hda), sector 999623
hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=1165945, sector=99962
5
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:04 (hda), sector 999625
hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=1165947, sector=99962
7
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:04 (hda), sector 999627
.....

this goes on until the message "loading music database" is displayed on the empeg screen! what does it says??? is there something wrong with the harddisk or is it still the problem that there is no database on the empeg??
if i type in "rwm" (described in the FAQ) there is also a failure message:

hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=1165826, sector=99950
6
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:04 (hda), sector 999506
EXT2-fs error (device ide0(3,4)): read_inode_bitmap: Cannot read inode bitmap -
block_group = 61, inode_bitmap = 499753

what does it means??? does anyone can help me???

thx a lot!

As stated in the FAQ, you also need to rule out disk drive trouble. That appears to be what you're having.

Just to expound on Tony's answer, the ``hda: read_intr'' messages you're getting are coming from the kernel and are telling you that it's having a hard time getting any data off of the hard drive at all, regardless of whether that data is correct for the application trying to read it.

You're definitely having some sort of hard drive problem. This could just be a cable issue, and I'd definitely try to reseat all of its connectors first (contact David first if your player is still under warranty), but, if the sector numbers you're seeing are always the same, then I'll bet it's a problem with the hard drive proper.

but after the loading process i can use the player normal! i mean it plays all songs on the harddisk and all other functions of the empeg are working! and if i can play any songs from the harddisk it can't be a problem of the harddisk or?

i'll try to check if the sector numbers are always the same! what's about the way to connect to the player via emplode, download all songs to the pc and the format the harddisk of the empeg or something like that????

Odd. Maybe that means that your disk's problem is in the scratch partition or in the database.

There's a drivebuilder image that you can use to reformat the empeg's drive to its initial state. You could download all of your mp3s to your computer first (preferably with jEmplode, as it has better features in this area) if you don't still have a copy of them on the computer first, and then reupload them. The drivebuilder is at the same place the normal software is, IIRC.
