Thanks

The maximum height is listed in the Drive Upgrade FAQ. 19.5mm for the Mk2/Mk2a and 14mm for the Mk1.

From the Empeg's harddisk upgrade FAQ on riocar.org :
"For the empeg Mark 1, the drive must be no taller than 14 millimeters. For the empeg Mark 2 and the Rio Car, the drive must be no taller than 19.5 millimeters."
Edit : Damn, beaten again. Oh well, for once it wasn't by Tony.

Thanks, I saw the statement in the FAQ, but I don't know if the 'big' and the 'small' 2.5" drive have the same electrical specs and usages.
These two types are all identical, except for the height?
Can I put in my Empeg one 'big' and one 'small'?
Of which type is the disk drive inside the Empeg?
Thanks again

one small and the other even smaller, about an half cm height.
I think the one that was about half-cm tall wasn't a 2.5" notebook IDE drive. It was probably a PCMCIA-card drive, not a 2.5" IDE drive.
Why would you want to use a PCMCIA-card drive in your empeg, when the 2.5" drives are cheaper per gigabyte, and you can get them in larger storage capacities.

Because I got two of them for free, two Fujitsu 10gb and 15gb size
Is it possible to fit them into the empeg?
(I assume then that it has the 'larger' one)

If they are PCMCIA cards, I don't think so, although I'm not sure about that.
It's hard to tell from your description exactly what it is you've got. Could you describe them in more detail, perhaps with model numbers and dimensions?

I don't think PCMCIA cards are in the 10-15GB range yet, nor are 1.8" IDE drives.
However, a 1.8" IDE drive should electrically plug right in to an empeg and a PCMCIA drive should work with a simple adapter. PCMCIA (for hard drives) is just a superset of IDE. Never seen a 2.5" style IDE to PCMCIA cable though. (3.5" yes.)
That said, there is of course little point. Unless the drives were free :-)
Cheers,
Rex.

I didn't know there was a such thing as a 1.8" IDE drive.

The 1.8" drives are, for instance, used in the iPods.

They are rare but exist. I have a few here. Basically a PCMCIA drive with a different connector. Mostly used in embedded systems.
1.3" IDE drives exist too though I think that was only the HP KittyHawk. Got a few of those also, tiny, in both size and capacity (20 and 40MB.)
Cheers,
Rex.

I thought the iPods used the same internals as the PCMCIA drives did.

I see. All clear now. PCMCIA==1.8" drives in a PCMCIA housing/interface.

Thanks

Here is an image of the two drives; I am not good to take measures 'on the fly', so they are 1cm in height, not 0,5
Label say: Fujitsu model MHN2150AT on one and MHN2100AT on the other.

Those look like ordinary laptop drives to me. Since they're not a slim as you originally stated, this whole thread has been a wild goose chase.
Those are probably fine and will work in the player just fine, assuming the drives are good (one tends to get what one pays for, you know. ).

You're right , but when at first I saw the drives, they seem to me that was slimmer than other 2.5" drives...
I think the drives are ok, they was originally ordered for a guy with a laptop that later doesn't want anymore. So they stayed in a shop for a long time unused...
Actually I don't get them for free, I think I will pay about 30 euros
Thanks
