Is there a way to make the empeg a turbo timer too? Maybe I am not the only one who has ever asked. Nothing turned up in a search.

Okay, sorry if I'm being a bit ignorant but what exactly does a turbo timer do?
I've seen them before but never worked out exactly how and why they're needed. I guess it's to do with turbo anyway

So long as there is nothing too special about it then it's possible to make one on the empeg.

A turbo timer is used to keep the engine running after the car has stopped, this allows the turbo to cool down whilst there is still oil being pumped round the engine. Otherwise the bearings and turbine shaft can warp and get damaged. If the turbo is oil cooled (I think most are) the stationary oil left in the turbo can 'crack' thereby causing the turbine equivalent of a blood clot.
The main problem with making a good turbo timer is ensuring that the engine continues to run but the car is secure. I think Clifford offer a turbo timer as an add-on to their fancier alarm systems.
I alway knew reading my brothers Max Power and Revs magazines would pay off some day!

FWIW, and Im sure there will be disagreements to this, but Turbo Timers are pretty much worthless these days. Reason being is that the quality of oil has improved tremendously over the time period where all of the turbocharging tales of woe came to light.

I've been heavily involved in the turbocharged aftermarket pefromance market since the late 80s. In the last 10 years, I have never seen a turbo fail from oil coking. I've pulled turbochargers apart that had 200k miles on them and while there was wear, there was no evidence of coking.

Change your oil often, use a quality oil and save your money on the turbo timer.

Yeah most people I know who run higher boost just let the car idle for a minute before turning the car off.

So as long as there are some turbo experts here can someone tell me what makes seels blow out. The turbo on my tdi golf blew out some seels at about 45K miles.

NO evidence of coking? I'm surprised.

It would be difficult for me to look at a glowing red turbo and say, "Gee, I don't need to let that idle for a few minutes. I'll just turn it off." (bacon sizzling sound in the back ground).

If turbo timers don't help, they certainly don't hurt. $100 for a little extra peace of mind isn't a bad idea.

I have a TT on my car, not because I need it (which I don't for the already stated reasons), but because it provides me with (1) an additional boost gauge to compare with my factory unit and (2) it offers a "peak hold" capability which is useful to me for tuning purposes.

As to utilizing the Empeg for this purpose, I would never want to do this because the new generation of TT's actually have an algorithm that caculates how long the engine should remain running based upon driving habits since last turn-on.

If you want a TT, there are many inexpensive units available from the likes of Blitz, HKS, and others.

In addition to the reason you mention, I would think the main reason would be:

If you use your empeg as a turbo timer, then you can't pull the empeg out of the car when you park it. BAD idea.

Some modern turbo charged cars (like an audi tt), have an electric pump to circulate oil or coolant after the car is shut off. Does this emliminate the need for a turbo timer?
