hi guys i dropped it
and my nipple got broke

i've sebnt and email off to the guys about gettign ti fixed ( or a replacement sent to me )
I just wanted to confirm whether MN12832E was the right one to get ( i am also trying to source a display through noritake )

so just need someone to confim the model of the VFD pls

I'm too lazy to do it now, but search for noritake and/or itron and find a post from Hugo (altman) or David. They say what it is.

But you might also want to contact support.

ahh... where else on the internet will you find people dreading the day their "nipple breaks". just imagine if one of your co-workers read over your shoulder .. i can only imagine what he's thinking.

It sounds like one of those "Mike's Hard Lemonade" commercials.

The scene would be something like this, involving a broken nipple, all bleeding and then a consoling friend saying "Want to go grab a Mike's?".

I dropped mine about a week and a half ago and broke the fill nipple. I just got the screen replacement today and I'm gonna solder it in.

I am.. frightened.

It's not too hard, as long as you have done rework before.

The easiest way to get rid of the old display is carefully cut all the pins off, well away from the PCB. Remove the glass. Next, pin-by-pin, remove the dead legs from the PCB. Finally, use some solder braid to open all the holes again before dropping in the new display.

Trying to remove the display "intact" is a lot harder and makes it easier to damage the board.

It's useful to solder just one pin at each end first to get the alignment right (and ensure that both ends are mounted with the same amount of pin going through the hole!). If you have a mk2 (as opposed to mk2a) one pin needs bending back and soldering to a patch wire that you should have noticed when removing the old display.

but i ahve to drive from sydney to brisbane on friday ( 1000KM ) for sword fighting conference and then back on monday and then off to melbourne on thursday ( 1300km ) for a concert ( livid ) and back the following monday.

lucky i had was able to borrow a laptop from work laptop can sit on the passengers lap and control via charcoalgrey's web interface toooo cool

I finally sat down and replaced my screen. I forgot to take pictures, but it was a simple straightforward operation, and now I am finally back in business

Just to be curious, how much was the total cost of the display? Where did you get it?

I got it from the boys in the UK who made the Riocar.

I sourced it from them at about 75 Pounds?

One thing i did , which I don't know if this is bad, I put some eletrical tape over the fill nipple to help reduce the chance of it breaking upon impact.

I hope the fill nipple doesnt get red hot or not like glue on its surface.

Yea, Tony is right actually putting anything on the nipple may just make matters worse. That is the only bad thing about vds's, they are fragile.... but then in the case of "strangeloop" who got his empeg stolen and the ran over and the display was fine, go figure.

Does the thickness of the tape mean that the fill nipple is in permanant contact with the base of the rotary control?

nope.. i didnt want the tape and nipple to touch the dial or board because the hit could transfer a shock to the fill nipple.

But if the fill nipple gets hot, that wouldn't be good.

well i made my trip and my display arrived between my trip to brsbane and my trip to melbourne
soldered it in with np's except for getting all the pins lined up
