explain... you mean like having a web interface on the player to load music and such... interesting... you can ftp things as it stands... that would actually be very cool... then you won't have to download emplode if you are at a friends house and want to snag an album of his or something. hm.

There was a thread a while back where (I think it was) Mark and I were talking about an applet version of jEmplode that would be resident on the Empeg... There are some technical issues to overcome (dealing with signed code on all the different supported platforms, etc), but it's something that would be fun to work on sometime.

Yeah trying to sign the applet is a major pain, I tried once but the directions blew me away to the point I was afraid to try.

Yes loren, exactly like that... not only for snagging albums when at a friend's house, but also for things like playlist and tag management/changes/updates... I take my empeg in to work so my workmates can stream music from it; it would be cool if I could somehow set them each up a playlist, or let them set themselves up one...

I was just looking at the keytool and jarsigner man pages, and the instructions don't look too bad, as long as you're already reasonably familiar with the mechanics of x509 public key crypto, which isn't usually something that can be understood quickly, at least not with the documentation I've seen.
If someone would like to provide me a jar file to sign, I'm sure I could do it fairly quickly. I already have a CA set up for other things, and I should be able to use that as a backend for signing the applet.
What would jWebEmplode need as far as permissions? Read access from the local drive, obviously. Anything else?

Write permission to the local drive for being able to download from the player, and of course, read/write on the player itself.

jEmplode itself needs to be modified some ... things like storing config settings need to be changed to load from a URL so you could read them off the Empeg webserver. It wouldn't be too hard if you're just talking supporting 1.2+ VM's ... It gets annoying trying to support 1.1 VM's because Swing doesn't ship with it and the old Swing 1.1.1 API's are slightly incompatible.
The other annoying thing is the fact that you have to sign it three different ways -- once for Netscape, once for IE, and once for the Java Plugin. And Netscape and IE use totally different authentication API's.... Good reference: http://www.suitable.com/CodeSigningBoth.shtml

i forgot about this thread. The more i think about it, the more i like this idea. Damn it would be cool to have the empeg be completely self contained WITH it's own built in music loader! That's cool!!! I'm surprised more people aren't jumping on this great idea. Maybe we should move it to Programming. =] Or suggest it to Roger in the Jemplode Vs. Emplode thread... that'll get someone working on it! heheh.

regardless, it's a non-implemented idea... which i sure would love to see. Did you guys ever attempt to work this into the initial design?

If we reflect on this some ...
1) Rob says the idea is not new
2) Rob thinks the idea is very good
3) The idea is not yet implemented
4) Rio developers never sit on their laurels
5) A curious "hey ho"

I believe the entire expression is "Hey Ho! Let's Go!" -The Ramones.

Unless it's the expression from whichever late night talk show host (or maybe Ed McMahon) that used to do it.

I thought that perhaps "Hey Ho" was a coded message to some of the other folks at empeg to enable some web-ish code into the next beta, hence "Let's Go!". Wishful thinking I suppose...

We have other methods for internal communication - like talking to each other.
"Hey Ho" is just my enigmatic kind of shrug.

Highly caustic comment! The question is, was anybody ever motivated by a motivational poster?

They can be quite motivational at short range if rolled tightly enough.

Actually, if I remember correctly from a different message...
Isn't it a "demotivational" poster that is in the bathroom?
