I was just sitting here at work when I got to thinking. "How does the empeg compare to an equivalent amount of CD changers?" I asked myself. In other words, how much would it cost to buy enough CD changers to match the storage capacity of an empeg.

Now, obviously, you can't put 10 CD changers into a car, but I was more curious as to the value you get from the storage of an in-dash MP3 player.

So I found an average price for 10-disc CD changers on mysimon.com (again, this is probably not an accurate measurement, so don't criticize too much ), which ended up being about $250. I then said okay, I have a total of 740 possible minutes in one changer. That's about 12.2 hours. I used the approximate amount of time possible at 128KB/sec from empeg.com.

Here is the price comparison I gathered from this.

Now does that show value or what? And with the empeg, you get portability and the best display of any head unit (in my opinion)!


Of course, the real reason I did this was three-fold.
I-
a) wanted to show the great value of the empeg (and justify the cost to my self at the same time)
b) was bored at work
c) have to pass the time with something till I get my empeg!

Don't they have 200-disc CD changers now?

Of course, even if they had an in-car version of one of those (I don't know if they do), it wouldn't be able to shuffle with the kind of speed that the Empeg does, and it wouldn't have the neat user interface, or the visuals, or the search functions, or the expandability, or the parametric EQ, or the pull-out security, or... (I could go on and on.)

I'm sorry, I should have stated that. I was talking about in-car CD changers because this is mainly an in-car player, despite the fact that you can use it in your home.

a mate has 2 Sony 300 CD changers on his home system. He bought them a week before I got my mk1 - boy was he jealous!!!

Large changers suffered problems in-car, not to mention a lousy takeup rate (since you lost $500 worth of CD's along with your changer whenever your car was broken into!). The largest I knew of was 50 disks (from Pioneer I think) but the last I heard, this model was nolonger available.

You'd need a Van to have some space left in the trunk if you had a 200 CD Changer...
And think about the accessibility. Jump from CD 1 to CD 100 .... hmm... special buttons on the headunit to jump +/+10 then it would need only 10 times pressing the button... Not very comfortable...
