Try running the builder image again on your new hard drive. Make sure you don't leave your original hard drive in the player while you do it.

That error has come up before. Look here. Looks like a bad connection.

...i will do that..but should i install the developer software on the new drive, or the consumer version as I have on the master drive? The instructions says to install the developer software, but I am thinking that there may be a problem with the developer vs consumer install on different drives. I am using 2.0-13 btw

The problems you are having do not stem from a developer/consumer mismatch as far as I know. You are looking at drive/cable/solder-joint troubles, or perhaps a disk drive that was not properly partitioned/formatted. Are you SURE the builder image got run on the drive? Are you SURE it really did format the drive and didn't just give you a message that the drive wasn't blank and sat there waiting for the "enter" key?

Perhaps running an fsck on the new drive, or re-running the builder.

This is bad, if I remember the major, minor numbers correctly, it looks like /dev/hdb4 (music partition on second drive) is unhappy...
fsck instructions are in the FAQ. Run it on at least the /dev/hdb4 partition.

I'm concerned that he's having to FSCK a drive that just got built by the builder image. That's not a good thing. If there is hardware trouble happening, an FSCK is going to just make things worse...

Well, it's not working now anyway... If it was my drive I'd do an fsck, I doubt fsck could screw it up beyond recovery by fdisk/builder image - or run another build (with a fresh downloaded builder image) - it might have glitched somewhere during the build.
And also look at the drive cable and IDE connector... or the drive itself...

Okay, good point. If the drive's already f*cked, then FSCKing is just going to f*ck it more. I just don't think it's going to solve his problems. It'll just spew forth a bunch more error messages confirming that yes, there's something really f*cked up at the hardware level.
Anyone ever see the bumper sticker, "Honk if you like to FSCK"?

"Honk if you like to FSCK"
Yep, seen it once.
Around here is also a car with the vanity plate " BOFH". Didn't even notice what brand of car it was, since I was ROFLMAO (which isn't really recommended to do while in traffic )

Greetings!
In this particular instance, the 10GB drive is from an old player, and should be partitioned, but empty. I know this is the case.
What might be possible, and what I would recommend, is to:
a) remove your existing drive
b) reinstall the new drive as the master
c) rebuild the drive, using the disk builder
d) let it run the self test for a while.
e) load up the new player software, and try to sync a few files into it
f) run and sync the player for a little while.
- This will validate if the drive survived shipping, or if the problem exists only when two drives are connected (i.e., bad drive cable).
If it continues to work, reconfigure, putting your existing drive in place, wiping the /fids directory of the new drive and making that drive slave again (jumper). Sync test.

Hey, I got the same kind of errors when I put in a used 10 gig drive too, look at this thread. All I did was run the disk builder two more times and it went away. I have been using my empeg with that drive almost every day since then with no problems. I think the disk builder just doesn't like it when the disk already has something on it.

Thanks guys!!
Problem solved...I switched the drives again and ran the disk builder and everything is fine. In fact, I no longer have the sync problems i had before the new drive was installed!!!!
I have already loaded 2G of music that was just waiting for a home. So far hav 3,400 songs on 11GB! Anybody know how to convert vinyl to mp3's because i must have 300 LP's rotting away that i want to digitize!
Thanks again!
Ed

Greetings!
Glad everything is working with the drive!!!
As for ripping records, you will need to connect your stereo's outputs to your sound card's inputs. You cannot connect the phono directly to the sound card, because the signal levels do not match, and you will either get really low or really high / distorted results (I don't remember which).
Once you have your stereo hooked up, you will need to clean the records as best as possible. The less noise you have to start with, the better.
You will need to have some (good) audio editing software on your computer to capture, edit, clean and segment the audio stream into nice tracks. I personally use Sound Forge, but CoolEdit is another excellent choice.
Once you get the audio into your machine (likely as a wave file), you can encode as you normally would.
Note: I personally avoid doing this, unless it is something really rare. If it is something that exists on CD, it is sometimes more worth while (when you figure in your time and effort recording / cleaning / tracking) to get the CD. That is what I usually do, if I can.
Or, you can borrow it or download it. The licensing questions about getting a second hand disk to rip or download is one I will not address here, but since you have the original on vinyl, it gets a bit fuzzier with the fair use laws, etc.

Hey Paul, I'm assuming that your run down on ripping vinyl would work the same for cassettes, would it not?
Sermons as a rule come on tapes, not CD's... I'd like to put some on the empeg....

Yeah, just don't wipe the cassettes down with a light cloth. Ain't gonna' do any good for you.
When I rip cassettes, I run the signal through my stereo amp and let that shape the sound how I want it. Yeah, then dump the entire tape to one wave file. I'll break out the individual tracks by hand later with CoolEdit (96, because it rocks over 2000). Then encode with your enc of choice.

Greetings!
I was actually working on rigging up a sermon converter for a friend at work who wanted to put them on the internet. Basically, the same rules apply, except that you can hook the tape deck directly to the PC if you want to. Long term, if you record your own, you should record directly into the PC, or get an audio CD Recorder that you can hook up to catch the audio.
One really nice thing is that you don't need to go overboard with the encoding. As with any voice grade recording, you probably don't need CD level encoding.

And it probably needn't be stereo, either. But, then again, doesn't the empeg have problems with mono MP3s?

[funny sermon story] I'm watching a sermon on DVD, John Piper is preaching away.... I hear an amen come from behind and almost wet my pants before I figured out that it was recorded in surround sound.[/funny sermon story]

I use Dart Pro from Dartech to record vinyl @ 16bits/22kHz through the line in on my sound card from a line out on my player amp. I then use it's filter and equalisation tools (it has scripts that you can download from the website to do specific jobs). I have had pretty good results on even badly damaged records. I'd recommend it, and it is now pretty low-priced.

I've done this successfully (also sermons, believe it or not) from Line out-Line in onto my sound card. You will only need to sample @ 8kHz for voice, any higher is wasted.

In reply to:

I suspect that you're thinking of the problems with low-sample-rate MPEG 2.5 files. They play correctly; it's just seek (including going to bookmarks) that's broken. Also, the uploaders get the duration and bitrate wrong.
It's something that I know I can live with until the next release. I invite others to make their own decisions.
