Why don't we reply to this post to discuss as well? I'm sure that some of the button hacks that we have come up with could be either improved upon or done in a different way. I'll start:

Quick In-Car Dimmer

Because I own a car that has Daytime Running Lights, I never turn off the headlight switch. When I shut my ignition off, the car will shut down all the lights, too (this is a Subaru Outback). Because of this, the headlight sense wire in my dash is always high, and the built-in dimmer in the Empeg will not work for me. I came up with a quick way to change the dimmer level with the remote using the vol+ and vol- buttons.

VolUp.CN=Bottom,Left,Left,Left,Left,Bottom,Bottom,Right,Bottom
VolDown.CN=Bottom,Left,Left,Left,Left,Bottom,Bottom,Left,Bottom

Odd. Never knew cars would do this. Mine turns on the daytime running lights the second I pull the gear shifter out of park. Turning on the headlights results in the parking lights first, then another notch will turn off the daytime lights and turn on the normal headlights. The headlight line is only high when the selector is moved away from the "off" position.

Actually I thought he meant that since the headlights were on all the time, he just left the switch in the "on" position (assuming his cars turns them off after he shuts it off).

Yeah, I didn't realize they worked that way either. I like it, though, because I never have to worry about weather I've left my lights on. Also, I never have to shut off the light switch, just the ignition. When I pull up somewhere at night, I just turn my car off, and it turns it's headlights off. If I were to leave the switch off, my lights would come on if my parking brake is off (manual trans.) so I can shut them off while the car is parked if I like.

The only downside is the Empeg dimmer not being automatic. Therefore the button hack.

I'm going to put a few more keywords in here in case someone was searching for ir_translate or macros. I tried searching the BBS for those keywords, along with button code macro or something like that and I still had to look for a while.

I'm sure there are a few members around that have more macros they could share.

I know I should search for this, but I'm too tired and I'll just ask (maybe we can add this to the Button Code FAQ, haha).

So, you can program macros? Into the remote, I'm assuming.

So, since I never use my remote, I could set it up so, say, 1 moved to previous EQ and 2 moved to next? And 3, 4, 5 mapped to my favorite info modes? And... then there's the "favorite visual" mode, so I could map a button to cycle through those? And maybe map buttons to do genre searches for my favorite genres??

I think this may be the (unfortunately un"elegant") solution to my UI quirk issues.......

Here, let me kick you in the FAQ

Yes, you could do some of those things. Sometimes the menu items move around (like the Info menu is ordered depending on what mode you are in currently), so you have to be careful when mapping buttons to traverse menu items. It is kind of inelegant, but I've found it's quickly done in the UI so most of the time I don't even see a menu pop down. Sometimes I'll get a flicker, but I only use the macros above to change dimmer levels, so it's not that often.

Mark, it seems like you're happy with the DRLs in your Subby, but if you'd ever like to disable them, perhaps just to try it out, there is just one connector under the hood you pull. The lights work like normal after that and there is no safety issue.

Cool, got a link to a more detailed description? I don't think I'd ever disable them permanantly, but if I ever decide to race the Cannonball Run with night vision goggles it might be nice to shut them down.

Hehe, I like it just because it allows me to pull into my driveway without flashing the neighbors bedroom with my headlights.

I did mine a couple of years ago, and I can't find the detailed Tutorial on it, but this one shows what the module that you unplug looks like. I assume it's the same on the Outback.

Edit (again): That link was for a new age Impreza, which might work, but here is one for the Legacy. (You have an Outback Legacy right?)

i just discovered this.... a while back, i lost my rio remote, so i got a creativelabs remote and mapped everything one-to-one by their hex code. when i added visual=visualseek, it didn't work at all, with the remapped button.

y=z // visual to visualseek
x=y // custom button to visual hex code

one would expect that hijack would see the relationship, and would automatically do x=z, which is the custom button to visualseek, but it isnt the case.

Design intent. 100%.

it was the remote that came with this cdrom. you need the codes? all i did was use the hijack menu to find them, and then map accordingly.

No, because that would stop you (for example) swapping two buttons on a standard remote, or doing this one of mine:
