ok, got my empeg today, installed it in my miata, and uploaded about 5 gig of stuff. usb works fine, but i can't get serial or ethernet to work. of course since i need serial to upgrade (came with beta 12c or 12d), that is more important than ethernet.

any suggestions? i tried both com ports on the back of the machine. made sure they were both enabled in the bios. tried all the com port selections in the empeg search option box. it just will not see the empeg when connected to the serial port. i am running win98. any special things that need to be set in the com port properties?

thanks,

jeremy

oh, i wish i wish i had an empeg...

Are you sure the Com ports work at all? Have you used them for anything else?

Do you have a device whose IRQ conflicts with the com port? Look in Device Manager and make sure. For instance, I once had a modem on Com3 which uses the same IRQ as Com1, and I couldn't send a new kernel to the Empeg if I was using the modem.

Next, go into Device Manager and set the port in question to the following settings:

See if that fixes it.

FWIW - I can't get my serial to work either. I've tried it on 2 different pc's, one of which has had other serial devices hooked to it recently. I'm guessing the serial cable is a null modem cable? If that's the case, pins 2 and 3 should be swapped, but don't appear to be - maybe we got the wrong cables by mistake?

Out of interest, are the bale locks on either side of the serial port on the back of the empeg flush with the end of the serial connector? We've had reports of the manufacturer fitting ones that were far too long, meaning the serial connector couldn't mate properly.

The cable is a null modem cable, yes. You say the pins don't appear to be swapped - is this because it doesn't appear to be working, or because you've checked the cable? It's possible we got sent the wrong cables by our supplier... they all look the same and they were definitely ordered as null modem ones!

Making sure they were plugged in as far as possible was one of the first bits of troubleshooting I did. As for the cable - it measures ~0 ohms pin2 --> pin2 and pin3 --> pin3 , and open from pin2 --> pin3 and pin3 --> pin2.

Hope that helps...

This is probably nothing to do with it, but have you any other software running that might grab the serial port? Like Hotsync for a Palm or PsiWin for a Psion 5?

The only problem I ever had with serial was because I hadn't closed down one of these background apps.

It has come to our attention that our cable suppliers made a mistake :(

The cables were ordered as null modem, came in bags marked with the correct null modem part code, but are in fact straight through cables - their manufacturing plant screwed up.

Rob's working on this at the moment and affected people will be sent new cables as soon as we can get our hands on some.

Sorry!
