Yeess. Oz customs tend to hold on to these new fangled kontrapshuns for a few days. Couldn't scare the public with new teknolojy could they, mm? besides they you have to hope that it doesn't get wrecked or lost by the postal kangaroo service and God knows how long they take to deliver a parcel. That's if the package can fit in the roo's puch for starters. If it can't you'll have to wait for the next bullock express to go your way. 3 to 4 days is pretty standard. Heh, the delay is nothing, I had the delay and then Aus Customs slugged me 35% duty and 22% sales tax (last Financial year) notwithstanding the customs declaration attached by empeg, (they informed me that the US/UK declarations are not recognised over here) they classed it as a car stereo/tape player. when I pointed out that it didnt have a tape mechanism, they said that I could query the decision, but it would effectively have to go to court, and that they would have to hold the empeg for the duration. FYI I am in WA (Western Austalia to all you 'mericans out there) and customs proccessing over here is done directly by TNT with them liaising with Aus Customs in Sydney. I had some difficulty getting hold of a contact name for Aus Customs in Sydney and they were NOT very helpful in the extreme. (customs, not TNT). I am waiting for some more MK IIs to come into the country before I order mine as I want a few precedents set. :-)

I've already received some feedback that 8471503000 (which is an INTERNATIONAL harmonized code) is indeed zero rated for import duty, and only GST will be charged.
If anyone in Australia experiences anything to the contrary I'd be interested to hear of it.

Ok, I had no problems getting the MK2 into the country. TNT were fantastic, I was on the road that day and they managed to track the box and get it delivered later when i got back.
I remember there was a duty to pay on the Mk1 but i forget how much, it certainly wasn't as much as you indicate. I only has the 10% GST to pay. THANKS JOHNNY]
i will say this several times in the hopes you get the message.

We'll send ISO connectors to everyone that needs one - it must have taken your player quite a while to clear customs if it's one that was shipped without an ISO cable.
The panel bolts shouldn't be more than finger tight, but the panel certainly shouldn't feel loose. You can try tightening them a little, but test the buttons at every quarter turn - if you overtighten, they can stick.

Well, I'm currently having fun with Customs in Melbourne. The package got from empeg to Melbourne in 2 days, which is pretty damn good. For the past four days it's been sitting in Customs while they try and figure out what it is.
Ah well.

They certainly don't use them to figure out how much duty should be paid. I spoke to two people (one a customs broker, and one from TNT) and neither of them seemed to think that the harmonised code was any use for classifying the product. I think it got classified eventually as a "computer weighing less than ten kilograms consisting of CPU, display and keyboard". I said it sort of had a wireless keyboard, and it certainly had a CPU and display. It definitely didn't take CDs or tapes, which ruled it out of some other categories.
Just for a lark, here's what the TNT tracking gave me this morning: date time location status 18 Aug 2000 07:01 Melbourne Out for delivery 17 Aug 2000 16:47 Melbourne Released from customs 17 Aug 2000 13:12 Melbourne Consignment held for inspection by customs 16 Aug 2000 15:04 Melbourne Consignment held for inspection by customs 16 Aug 2000 11:08 Melbourne Consignment held for inspection by customs 15 Aug 2000 12:17 Melbourne Consignment held for inspection by customs 14 Aug 2000 16:12 Melbourne Consignment held for inspection by customs 13 Aug 2000 14:53 Melbourne Receiver on holiday 13 Aug 2000 14:30 Melbourne Pc 13 Aug 2000 11:48 Melbourne Import received 11 Aug 2000 17:11 London Heathrow Consignment passed through transit point 11 Aug 2000 00:03 Northampton Hub Consignment passed through transit point 10 Aug 2000 20:26 London Stansted Shipped from originating depot

Congratulations, Richard! Does this mean we'll see a 1.0 Voladj for Mk1/Mk2 soon?

The harmonised codes are definitely recognised in Australia - it was by quoting the code that one of our clients obtained the official duty rate (zero) from an Australian customs office.
The problem with customs clearance (throughout the world, generally) is that you are left to the mercy of a particular clerk - and if they're an idiot or having a bad day, you get to suffer as a result. That said, most of our stuff goes through immediately, and TNT in particular are helpful in tracking customs problems.

Congratulations, Richard!
Thanks. Initially I was thinking of selling my MkI, but I've become quite attached to it. Also, I ride my bicycle to work, so my empeg either lives at home/in the car, or at work, but not both. Now, think I'll probably have one in the car, and one at work. :)
Does this mean we'll see a 1.0 Voladj for Mk1/Mk2 soon?
You betcha! Hopefully in about 14 hours from now. I've built a Mk2 kernel using Kim's .config, (but I took out the NFS stuff) but I'd like to test that it works!

I had no problems getting mine in to Aus at all... (other than the painful wait while I watched its progress across the world on the TNT tracking system)
Took 3 days to get from empeg to Perth and then TNT were great on the phone with their broker contacting me to ask what it was... he said if it was classed as a stereo component I would have had to pay 15% duty but as a computer there was no duty to pay just GST...
That was on Thurs... Friday they contacted me to get payment details for GST and it arrived Monday morning... *grin*
and I have already filled the drive... oh dear... :)
Cheers
Kim

So, your customs guys accepted it was a computer? Ours allowed it was, internally, but as its main purpose is playing music in car, they charged 8% ICE duty anyway. TNT people told me it was not worth arguing, it never works...
Enjoy the new toy!
