are the ethernet card and modem attached to a pc? basically you either need the modem to be attached to something doing connection sharing and port remapping.

yup...look around for port forwarding. I think it may be built in to some versions of Win2k

EDIT: argh...I'm redundant yet again.

Oh yeah forgot that pc thing connecting the whole lot together which runs win2k and i have winroute lite running on it and have a freebie version of winroute pro hanging around as well

whole lot is connected to a network hub, empeg haveing a fixed IP to make it easier to connect to it with a crossover cable when it is off on travels the laptop on a wireless connection to make it easier to surf the web from anywhere it getting an address from PC on desk

If that makes things clearer

Yes, it can be done (as was said by others in this thread).

But, to paraphrase Ian Malcolm...

The people on this thread were so concerned with answering whether or not you could, they didn't stop to give you advice on if you should.

I have serious reservations about seeing Thinfourth put ICS on his PC:

- ICS is a piece of crap software implementation that I've personally seen screw up the network configuration of more than one PC.

- Exposing the empeg to the internet is dangerous, because by default it has no network protection on it. People could delete tunes, erase the hard disk, etc., all without a password.

Sure, both of the above can be worked around and dealt with by someone who's very good with these sorts of things, someone who knows how to lock down the empeg and to troubleshoot the inevitable problems with installing ICS. But while I'd trust Thinfourth with my life if I needed the Diesel engine on my oil tanker repaired, I'm not so sure he's the right guy to be plunging alone into the world of Microsoft's Buggy and Badly Implemented Connection Sharing Software.

Okay, well, that changes everything. Since you're already mucking with this stuff, then be my guest!

And more power to you, that you're not using Microsoft ICS.

I tryed ICS and was amased at how quickly my network stopped working it wa like attacking the cables with wire cutters. i was shown winroute by someone on this board and was impressed

As to doing this i am just pissing around and want to learn more so if i can do it great another little bit of knowledge gained from the board, one cannot live by diesel alone

Yes it probably is a bad idea but still want to know more

Yup. My experience, too, and it was the reason I suggested that you don't use it.

As a BRIEF demonstration:

http://rtr.ca:8086/?FID=101&EXT=.htm

Note: this link will cease to function sometime on 7-Feb-2003,
so please don't bug my firewall after that.
Also, the bandwidth (in theory at least) is limited,
so you probably cannot successfully stream music from it..

Cheers

EDIT: URL repaired after BBS code tried to mangle it..

The link is wrong. It should be "http://rtr.ca:8086/?FID=101&EXT=.htm" instead of "http://rtr.ca:8086/?FID=101&EXT=.htm<pre"

Oh, by the way..

That's a "docked" empeg, one of my backup units in the new dock. I guess the ethernet connection is working, huh.

ICS does lack usefull documentation, but if you know the behind-the-scenes of what it's doing, it works quite well. I've configured it many times for co-workers to have to travel with their laptops and demo software by allowing customers to share their network connections.

ICS pretty much turns your PC into something like a Linksys Cable/DSL router: enables NAT and a DHCP server and forces your IP address to be 192.168.0.1 (hence dropping off the LAN).

I used to do this. Forwarded port 3535 into port 80 (on the empeg) on my internal LAN via iptables (linux). Never had any problems.

I think ICS would be great... if it didn't force the 192.168.0.1 IP.... what if I want to actually configure something other then that? For this single reason it makes it absolutely useless to me.
