Is the anyway to compile a driver for some USBwireless adapter either 802.11b or the 54 mb one. into the kernel ?
? or does the usb port not work for that kind of stuff ? I mean is it set into slave mode only ?
since I never use it I figured why not try to put a USB-Wireless NIC on it

Yes. The USB port on the empeg is a slave port. Plugging a USB ethernet adapter into it would be very difficult, if not impossible.

An alternative is to use a wireless/ethernet converter (e.g. the Linksys WET11) to connect the empeg to your wireless AP.

Oh, by the way:

If you don't need the device to be really small, I would recommend using the WAP11 instead.

1. It is cheaper than the WET11, and
2. it is more flexible, since you can also use it as a bridge (which you need if you want to use a laptop in your car once in a while (wired to the "car network" which is connected through the WAP11 in the house).
3. The WAP11 can be updated to run at 22MBit instead of 11 if your flash a D-Link software to it instead of the LinkSys software. This also enables you to increase the antenna power level.
   

Don't know wether the last point also holds true for the WET 11 as well..

Isn't the 22mbps stuff by flash upgrade only supported on the newer WAP11s? I thought the older hardware simply wasn't capable of it.

The WET11 is actually a bridge, and can be used in the same manner. Of course, you would need a hub/switch to have the empeg and the laptop plugged in at the same time.

I completely agree with you on going with a WAP11 instead, though.

I've seen a Bluetooth-Access-Point from http://www.tecom.com.tw which provides an USB-Master to drive a printer. Maybe it would be possible to get this thing working with the empeg's USB-Slave. But this could be much more complicated than plugging into the ethernet-port. Just an idea.
