I'm getting the Verbatim "Digital Vinyl" CDRs for a project I'm doing. Now I'd like to put them in some sort of vinyl-like packaging. Having these "vinyl" discs in jewel cases sort of takes away from the retro look. Does anyone have an idea of what type of case I could put these things in?

Actually, does anyone know where I could buy packaging like that of Pearl Jam's Vitalogy? That's pretty close to what I'd want, although some sort of double album style would be better.

What about getting some cardboard sleeves made up?

Yeah, that would look like an album sleeve. I'm just worried about the discs. Do those things scratch the CDs much? I thought that the style of the Vitalogy album was good because it looks like one of those cardboard sleeves, but it has a plastic holder inside.

You could try gluing a plastic sleeve inside the cardboard sleeve to protect the CD. The plastic sleeves seem to be quite cheap and available in huge packs.

Dunno where else it is used, but on my "Best of... James" CD the disk itself is held on a simple foam disk a couple of mm high. This appears totally unbreakable and much more secure than those poxy plastic spigot thingies that where obviously invented by the same man as did the dreaded "tetrapak" ....... (rant over).

I've seen them used by NavMan, with their SmartPath City and SmartPath Trip software. The rest of the case was just flimsy cardboard, so I wasn't very impressed overall, but the foam disk worked pretty well...

And what've you got against Gad Rausing? I see no problems with tetra-packs, but then again, they've been used here for all of my life...

Bah, what's wrong with tetrapak? The bricks of milk and yogurt worked just fine for me.

Here are a few options for paper cd sleeves. The colored ones kinda look retro-like.

.....what, what,.... you can actually open them. Luckily their existence here in "Blighty" is almost over, superceded by little plastic flip caps cunningly grafted onto a tetrapak type carton (but not a tetrapak cos you don't end up wearing the contents).

Regarding cardboard sleeves scratching your CDs, I've got several CD singles that are in this format. Judging by them, I think you're going to get a modest amount of wear as the CDs go in and out. But most of it is going to be on the edges of the CD, so if you're not recording a full 80 minute disc then it's probably not a problem. Even then, I don't think a very mild amount of wear on the edges is going to cause you too much trouble. If necessary, line the cardboard sleeves with something like that plastic CD soft case material and you should have much less trouble.

After all, I remember all of my 12" records having a plastic or fine paper insert into which the record slid before the whole was inserted in the outer cardboard cover.

Does anybody know where I can actually buy these in the UK? Nowhere at all seems to stock any of the Verbatim products apart from the standard DataLife (something like that) CDRs.
