Ok, I'm trying to delete the database and am having 0 luck. I put the dev image on the player, but I can't even get to a working shell. I've tried holding down q, pressing rapidly, etc but no dice. The machine goes straight into player mode and won't even listen to keystrokes to control the player.

I'd like to know how I might be able to increase the timeout for pressing q or any other way I can get to a shell prompt.

after that I was going to do

dest-empeg:/# cd /empeg/var
dest-empeg:/empeg/var# rwm
dest-empeg:/empeg/var# rm tags database playlists

and reboot the player

HEALLLP!

The machine goes straight into player mode and won't even listen to keystrokes to control the player.
This indicates trouble with the serial cable or the port settings.

But I followed the FAQ RELIGIOUSLY!!!

I was able to interact with the player just fine using the standard consumer image and the same settings in hyperterm, so I doubt it's the cable.

How DOES one increase that timeout?

P.S. A thought for the bss faq when you have spare time... you could put an example next to the UBBCode flags.

Could be this. But, as I seem to be the only one with that problem I would say it is more likely you have flow control set incorrectly in your terminal software.

The timeout isn't the issue (it is only there for the software that updates the player), you are supposed to be able to hit 'q' at any time. Did you try control-c as well?

Ctrl-C doesn't work either. You know what's funny; the developer image seems to be mounting the drives read only.... isn't that abnormal when plugged into ac power?

No. The drives are always mounted read-only except during a sync or when you manually change it.

Double-check your serial settings, especially flow control. Then wait until the player is no longer producing any text output and press `q', then <Return>. If that produces nothing, press `q' and <Return> again.

The only issues I have had along similar lines have all been down to problems with the serial interface on my PC (or more accurately issues with bl**dy Microsoft's handling of COM ports)

It is worth retrying 'q - Enter' at various points after the player is up and running, but I would try and change the com port you are using. I have had mine hijacked by something else a couple of times and it stuffs hyperterm.
