I don't know whether it is customary to congratulate Easter where you are from, but it is in Croatia. Anyway, regradless of whether one celebrates anniversary of the most important case of Divine intervention or merely Northern hemisphere's spring equinox, one's thoughts come to life, fertility, new beginning.... So, let's rejoyce, my friends!

(Disclaimer: This slightly incohherent post is partly due to digestive anemia induced by overindulging in ham of every possible kind and description, eggs, cottage cheese with rich sour cream, green onions, radish, horse radish..., not to mention some perfectly good local red wine. While not Christian, I am not above participating in Christian rituals that include a good meal )

Cheers!

As a very nice Easter Sunday suprise, this morning we found that the birds who nested behind the speaker above our hot tub have laid eggs. Very cute little couple, small brown birds, with the (I assume) male having red on its head and back.

I'm having trouble locating an online resource which will let me identify the birds without even knowing what genus they're in. I suppose they're sparrows or finches or some such. Anyone have good links to some kind of an engine that will let me narrow down what kind of birds they are?

Just post a picture of the birds here. Someone will probably know the answer.

Heh, getting close enough to get a photo with my camera (which does not have much of a zoom) is the problem.

I think they might be Cassin's Finches, but if so, they're kind of out of place right now. They're supposed to be at higher altitudes this time of year. We're only at 1700 feet.

And I'm not sure the pictures match my observations exactly. They are close, but our male has more striking crimson red on his head and back, and I don't recall the purplish hues on the throat.

Song sounds about right, though.

Update: Got a better look at the Male today, I take back what I said above. I'm now nearly certain they are Cassin's Finches.

The song is the best way to ID many birds.

Yeah, and as proof I got the ID correct: When I clicked on the link which played the WAV file of a Cassin's Finch song, I had the speakers on my PC turned up pretty loud. In the next room, my wife said, "Hey, hon, the birds are back again".

Reminds me of Peter Kay's 'Stars in your Eyes' joke. I won't go into the details, but those who know Peters act will understand.

I had BBQ rabbit. And tandoori BBQ rabbit. And some sort of salad that had rabbit in it. Very tasty.
