Hi all, I'm trying to decide which 60GB drive to buy.

I can get:
Toshiba MK6022GAX for $349 (16MB Buffer, 5,400rpm)
Toshiba MK6021GAS for $279 (2MB Buffer.. 4,200rpm)
or the
IBM 07N8328 for $509!!!!!!!!!!!

The IBM is almost twice the price. Any idea how the Toshiba will work out for me? I've read some of the posts (Using the search function... hehe). It seems the Toshiba is fairly good

Assuming you mean to buy them for your car player and not your laptop...

As it says in the Drive Upgrade Guide, get the cheaper one. The speed of the faster and more expensive one will be wasted on the car player.

Exact quote:

Disk drive access speed isn't a factor, since the player uses an aggressive caching algorithm that leaves the disks spun down most of the time. Any modern laptop hard disk should be fast enough, and you will not notice any speed increase by purchasing a faster disk drive. In fact, if choosing between a fast drive and a slower drive, the slower drive is probably the better choice because it will most likely be cheaper and produce less heat. Your biggest concern will be the price/capacity trade-off.

If it's for the car player why not get an 80GB for $300.00?

Wow quite a few responses, quick

I forgot to mention those prices are in Canadian Funds.. hehe. My main question was the reliability of the IBM vs. Toshiba for the Rio Car. And the noise which each create, etc.. etc..

Now would the more on board cache 16MB vs 2MB help with the RIO car? I'm assuming it probably wouldn't..

I had some trouble with Toshiba-drives in winter.
They wouldn't start up on first boot after a cold night in the car, so I had to restart my empeg a few times.
I never had that with IBM drives.

Thought this might be an issue in Canada...

Identical experience here in the Netherlands, with a 40Gb Toshiba as primary drive. No problems at ambient temperatures, however sub-zero often reboot required during startup. Probably due to too slow drive spinup at low temps at boot time.

I'm about to throw my Toshiba 60 GB drive out the friggin window. I had what seemed to be the same problem, but seems to have evolved into something worse. The drive is terribly fluky now indoor at room temperature (in my empeg).

If you want it, just be outside my window in the next few minutes.

I'm thinking I might just get that 80 GB to replace it...
