Managed to cross wire unit for 2 seconds and now player has high audio noise interference! Does anyone know what to replace or a good repairers I can send unit to (UK)...Cheers

Can you describe in more detail:

- Exactly how it was cross wired (what were you doing when it happened), and
- exactly what do you mean by noise interference?

It's possible you might have just blown an external fuse, such as the one inline on the yellow wire on the back of the sled.

If you were working with the docking sled wiring when the alleged "accident" happened, maybe the cross wiring didn't actually hurt it. Maybe something else unrelated and easily fixable is wrong, like this?

I was fitting anther unit into a car (wiring the docking sled) copying the wires from my car! I realized there was a cable extension on my unit which I thought was unnecessary, so I removed it to allow for more space to push unit back into place, but unfortunately in the extension cable wires are rerouted to different locations in the jack plug, didn’t notice this! plugged my unit back in and smelt electrical smoke quickly unplugged unit, notice the wires were crossed now because the extension cable was not in, replugged extension back in, unit still boots up ok and all functions are working probably , but there is a loud interference noise coming though all speakers in the car ! Tried the other empeg unit, which sounds clear... I think myself I have blown a noise suppresser inside the unit!! But I am no electrician!! cheers...

From your description, yes, you've blown something inside the unit. There really aren't any "noise supressors inside the unit" per se, but you've certainly blown something.

Plugging the other empeg in for diagnosis really helped to be sure.

And yes, it's important to know the difference between a simple extension cable and a wiring adapter. It might be helpful to know exactly what wires got connected to what other wires. For example, if you applied 12 volts to the headlight sense, or connected one of the audio connectors to ground, or what? But from your own admission, you don't know what all of the wires do and didn't know what the adapter did, so you probably can't tell us that.

Your only option may be to send it in for repair. It doesn't sound simple.

I have tried twice emailing the support over the last two weeks but had no reply, would you know any other repairers I could send the unit too? Or should I trust a local ice shop!

Is the noise still there on AC power using the RCAs on the empeg itself?

This sounds like you've operated the unit without a ground, and it has taken ground through the audio grounds - and burnt them out (they're not designed to carry any serious amount of current).

Try this: connect the audio ground (outside of the phonos) to the case of the empeg. Does the noise get quieter or disappear?

Second: using the home outputs, is the sound OK?

Yeah tried this and it worked! Great noise totally gone now! Only needed to apply one ground only for noise to totally disappear, also tried unit at home with RF cables and it sounded normal too.... Many thanks for the help… cheers jimmy...

That grounding trick was just meant for diagnostics. Something is blown inside the player still, and it still needs to be fixed...

Yes, though if you don't want to take the player to pieces, it's acceptable to just provide a ground externally - it won't be quite as good (given that the ideal ground is the analogue ground next to the DACs) but it's definitely less hassle!
