With any reasonable amount of ambient light, it is very difficult to tell what combination of these parameters are active. Rather than raise the background of the parameter from dark to dim, perhaps simply inverting the image (text dark, background high) would be more effective.

I suppose I should tint my windows, that would probably help some too...
