Nissan Primera - anyone?

All,
I've got a friend who's interested in the mk1, but is worried that the empeg sled won't fit in his Nissan Primera (series2), since it seems to have a different mounting for the stereo.
He claims it's an ISO standard connector, rather than a DIN one, but I don't know enough to advise - can anyone help me out here?
Is there an adapter available or some other solution? Anyone else installed in a Nissan Primera?
Cheers,
Paul.

If the sled in the Nissan isn't a standard-sized you should get a mounting-kit for standard-head units at a Nissan-dealer. I had to do it with my Peugeot's sled, too.
If he has an ISO-connector he'll be fine. If he has some other connector he should get an adapter to ISO at a good car-audio-store. Maybe some other can give you the link - it has been posted in the BBS for several times already, but I don't know it right now.

When I say ISO connector - I don't mean at the back of the stereo (it's got an ISO power/audio/etc cablely thing ) he's actually talking about the rectangualr shaped hole in the dash. Allegedly he's got two screws on the sides of the stereo unit, rather than tabs to press down, as with the empeg sled. Does this make sense? Paul. Paul Haigh, 6GB, Blue Reg: 4120 - Serial 00254

I just installed mine in a Primera but it is a series 1, that and a MKII empeg.
But for reference, it has 2x Standard DIN slots, a high one and a low one. The docking tray fits nicely. However it doesn't have an ISO connector, but that's not really an issue, nothing that a pair of wire cutters and a soldering iron wont fix.

My Question is this: is soldering a big deal? I never soldered any connections on my unit and I'm pleased with the sound quality. Would it make a difference at all?

Soldering isn't so much about sound quality as it is about durability and longevity. If you just twist wires together, they're going to fall apart pretty quickly. If you use a crimping tool and some crimping connectors, that will buy you some time, but those will get corroded over time, and they can come apart if the wires get tugged.
The quality thing comes into play when you try and pour a bunch of juice through the wires. If they're just crimped or twisted, high-power applications will suffer because those kinds of connections won't transmit enough electrons to get the job done properly.
[anecdote] I have a friend who's quite experienced in sound/audio stuff. He's a recording engineer and a music producer, as well as a musician. However, he didn't have much car audio experience when he installed a certain car stereo a few years back. Since my family often went on trips with his family, I spent a lot of time in the back seat of this particular car. And I kept telling him that his right rear speaker would cut out every time he went around a corner a certain way. He didn't believe me because he didn't notice it from the front seat for the brief periods it happened. And he was so sure that the crimp connectors on those speaker wires were fine. Until they just fell out completely and the speaker quit working altogether... [/anecdote]
[soapbox] I am a firm believer that all car stereo wiring should be carefully soldered and shrink-tubed (note: not just wrapped in tape because that comes undone, too). If you're not prepared to solder and shrink-tube the wiring connections on your car stereo installation, it's time to hire a professional to do the job. Period. [/soapbox]

Amen, actually I used self-amalgamating tape. It sticks to itself and doesn't come undone. It's just a little quicker and easier than shrink tube.

I feel dumb.. I paid high dollars ($500) for a pro shop to do my install and they only crimped them.. I feel like taking it back and making them do it right.. they even missed two speaker the front ones.. although they did the dash just not the door speakers. And this is an IASCA shop. Someday soon I'll post pictures and a long rightup about installing an empeg in a SAAB... not an easy thing for me or the pro shop... but they could have at least soldered and shrink tubed the connections for $500.. thats nearly half the cost of the empeg.

I should note that from now on I'm doing all my own installs and would advise anyone who asks to do the same. It will save you a lot of money and it isn't all that difficult to figure out. Plus you could always just ask Tfabris if you get stuck. He seems to know gosh darn near everything. BTW - whats the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?

units-converter program
Naaahh...
furlong = 1/8 mile fortnight = 14 days
so 1 furlong per fortnight would be the same as 8 furlongs per 112 days, or 1 mile per 112 days or 1 mile per 2688 hours
so one furlong/fortnight would be 1/2688 miles per hour or about .00039 miles per hour
Figure a swallow could fly at about 63 mph, and you end up with about .0234 furlongs per fortnight.
Units converter programs? We don' need no steenkin units converter programs...

"Treasure of the Sierra Madre", with Humphrey Bogart.
I once had to explain that line to someone who'd never seen Treasure of the Sierra Madre. He'd heard the line satirized in Blazing Saddles and thought that was its origin. I set him straight.

Monty Python - Quest for the Holy Grail. Duh.
We were joking about Holy Grail earlier, yes, but Doug specifically asked about the "We don't need no steeking converter programs" line, which is a reference to "We don't need no stinking badges" from Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
Incidentally, much like the "Play it again, Sam" line in another Bogie flick, the "remembered" version of the line is somewhat different from what's actually in the film. The actual line in the film doesn't contain the words "We don't need no stinking badges" in that exact order. The original line goes something more like:
Bogart: If you're federales, where are your badges? Bandito: Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. (Angrily) I don't have to show you any STINKING BADGES!

Sounds like you do need one. 63 mph = 169344 fpf.Ooops... so I multiplied by 63 when I should have divided into 63... Hey, it was close, only off by a factor of 7.2 million. Why, that's only six orders of magnitude. It's nice to know that there's someone out there checking up on my math! I have applied for a job with the US Government, pricing out things like toilet seats and hammers. Well, after this debacle, I better go practice my gazintas. Adding and subracting is easy, multiplication a bit harder, but gazintas are hardest of all. You know -- like seven gazinta 63 nine times. tanstaafl. "There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch"

I had a mk1 one installed in my P10 ("series 1") Primera GTe up until the weekend. There should be one or two pictures of the install in Rob Schofields report on the Amersfoort, NL Owners Meet when he gets it on the web (well I don't know if I would call it an "install", but it was in the car and running nicely). I found that I didn't need to use the grounding leads. In fact with them I was getting alternator noise while without them the sound quality was great! The empeg docking bay fits into the dash without any problems, and there is plenty of space in behind for all the cabling. Sorry, I can't tell you about the connectors on the cars wiring harness 'cause the B#§&%*x who had the car before me just chopped them off to install his cheap old Blaupunkt cassette deck. The factory cabling is fairly light though, so you may want to replace a reasonable amount of it anyway. The power, ground and speaker wires at least. I've now got my mk2 installed and I'm getting really nasty alternator noise. In fact I'm getting quite a lot of noise even without the motor running! (fuel pump?). Anybody got any suggestions on what to check out here? The music from the under the bonnet is not quite the same (and it only gets interesting at around 7000 rpm or 200km/h on the autobahn ). I hope you didn't do 200 when driving to Amersfoort, about 99,9 percent of the Netherlands is covered with speedtraps ... Yes,the flashing you saw was not people trying to stop you to look at your empeg but actually the cops getting the money for their anual policemens ball together. Hans P.s. okay okay the 99,9 percent is not completely true but it seems that way sometimes. Mk2 - Blue - 080000431
