I did some browsing in the posts of last year and installed Limewire, but there was no love (something about not finding a server?) Is there a step through guide I can reference someplace? Not to phrase it lewdly, but could somebody please FAQ me? Thanks.

Uh, dude.
Completely off subject, but regarding your profile image.
That is wrong, disgusting, sick, and completely uncalled for, not to mention inhumane and not family-friendly.
I LOVE IT! Where the heck did you get that? Is there more?
Me.

Well, it came to me via email this morning from another person as sick and twisted as myself. I've no idea who the original creator is, but I have a slightly larger version I can post someplace if anyone wants it.

I knew I had that movie laying around somewhere, so I searched for it. I've uploaded it to my webspace, so here it is, for all of you to enjoy.
http://users.pandora.be/archeon/
Also, I don't know if you know this, but there is actually a sequel to that movie. I've got it here too, but I can't upload it to my webspace. Everytime the counter reaches about 0.5 mb the upload failes due to "exceeded quota" (the file is 3.5mb), which is nonsense because the only thing that is on that webspace is the first movie and the total webspace is 50Mb.
I've had this problem in the past, and I was never able to solve it. Since I practically never use that webspace I haven't searched for a solution too.
Does anybody know what causes this? I've already tried two different FTP programs (FlashFXP and CuteFTP), AND I've tried it with two different providers (I've got both a cable and a DSL account, they are two completely separate webspaces). Both show the same problem.
Is this caused by a setting in the FTP client?
If you guys can help me solve it, I'll upload the second movie too.
Edit : Nevermind, I've phoned my ISP and they told me that they had that limitation built in to prevent people from sharing larger files (aka music files)...This isn't mentioned anywhere in their FAQ's! Aaargh!
My cable-ISP has this restriction at 0.5mb. So I decided to rar the file and split the rar file up, but that didn't work also. Somehow they checked the filenames of all the parts.
So I checked with my DSL ISP. They have the same limitation, but for files bigger than 2mb (still too small). So again, I rar'ed the file and uploaded it. This time it worked, but there was no way to reach the files anymore. I had to rename the files to .jpg before I was able to download them again.
But finally here's the link
Download both the files. Rename them back to .rar. Use RAR to decompress back to original .MPG file.
Play and enjoy!

Is there any reason you specifically want to install Limewire ? Last time I used it I uninstalled it within the first half hour of use because of all the spyware that was built-in. There are better file sharing utilites than Limewire. KazaaLite is still one of the best, as is WinMX or Soulseek. Tesla didn't look too bad either.

The paid version has no spyware and works OK. I mainly use Shareaza (sp?). Some of the little documentation/posts I could find mentioned a 'Limewire client', so I got Limewire, hoping blindly that would make things work.
I just want to play with Serendipity a little. Does anyone have it working or is it a dead project?

Ah. Didn't know that there was a paid version of Limewire. You can imagine how long it's been since I've last installed it.
But I can't help you with this Seredipity thing. To be honest, I don't even know what it is. It it a new Gnutella client of some sort?

Yes!
My interest was piqued by this post.
The concept is intriguing as my current method for getting new/different songs involves browsing 10,000's of alt.binary usenet postings and pretty much trying songs at random.
I didn't see any further posts about it tho.

I haven't had time to work on it in a while because of another project, but it should be included in the latest installer (upper left corner link on www.jempeg.org). If you go to, I think the Apps menu then Serendipity, I think it should do everything else -- that is to say, it worked for me a couple months ago, but it's pretty untested... I don't know if anyone else actually uses the feature at all.

The concept is intriguing as my current method for getting new/different songs involves browsing 10,000's of alt.binary usenet postings and pretty much trying songs at random. Hmm. If you're a WinAMP user, you may wanna try flipping through the Shoutcast streams. I kinda ignored Shoutcast for several years, until recently, when I realized that my music collection was devoid of new material. The good thing about Shoutcast is that most (all?) of the stations are not-for-profit, and not controlled by any of the Big Media companies. So, while you'll find Top 40 stations, you'll find some stations with really eclectic mixes. And since most of the stations embed the artist/title information in the streams, you know what you're listening to, unlike conventional radio.
So when I'm in the mood to dig for new music, I pretty much flip through about 30 of my favorite Shoutcast stations, wait until a cool song comes on, and push a button to save the artist/title information for later searching/purchasing. I even rigged it up to my remote control so I can push a button and "bookmark" whatever song is playing.

Thanks.

Oh, FWIW, that list is all 56k+ streams, most are 128k, so I hope you're on some sort of broadband. And I haven't had a chance to root through a lot of the stations lately, so do yourself a favor and fire up the Winamp music library and click on "Internet Radio" or whatever it's called... It lets you filter by genre, bitrate, and tells you what song is currently playing. Might be new since WinAMP 2.9x.
Also, if you like the idea of saving the titles to a text file for later use, you'll need a program called Girder along with the DVDspy plugin, which is what lifts the information out of WinAMP. There's definitely some hacking you need to do to make it work, if you're really interested I can share that stuff with you.

Here's a link to a Shoutcast competitor. I stumbled on the site once when I was looking for an alternative to Shoutcast. (shoutcast didn't work for me at that time) : Live365

Last time I tried them (about a month ago) it worked just fine with Winamp. If they had required me to install a proprietary player I would have never used their service.
I really hate those things, it seems like they always have a hidden agenda.

Mike,
I've got v.45 installed already, gave it a try and got the attached error message/dialog box. For giggles, I tried setting port forwarding on my Firewall/NAT box on ports 87, 54,55, thinking that the numbers on the error message may be ports. This did not work .
Any thoughts? I'm running a W2k Box on a cable modem enabled LAN (home).
I'm willing to try whatever, I think the idea is pretty sweet.

The numbers are actually line numbers in the source code of where the error occurred ... So the error message is pretty straightforward, but the reasoning behind it could be many different things. Have you ever installed LimeWire directly to see if you can get that to work on its own? When that runs, it will generate a file that contains the list of gnutella hosts that were found (I don't have the source handy to tell you the name of that file). jEmplode expects the same file, but I believe it loads it out of your home directory (Documents and Settings/yourusername on Win2k, I think). If you can track down that file, then just copy it into your home dir and rerun jEmplode and see if it works .... it's supposed to automatically generate that file for you, but obviously there's something wrong.
Basically, if you can't get limewire to work on its own, you won't get Serendipity to work, so that's definitely your first task.

Limewire is working OK. I have Limewire Pro 2.9.11 and is working for inbound & outbound.
I put the entire contents of C:\Program Files\LimeWire\2.9.11 Pro into C:\Documents and Settings\Myusername just to try the shotgun approach, but I still get the same error.
It seems to be timing out waiting for hosts. I poked around the limewire files looking for a hosts file but didn't find any (although I did not look at every one, just the more promising looking ones).
Mmmmm....

I'll have to look at the source when I get home (out of town for the week) to see what the exact file is ... it may be that the protocol changed or something.

I saw from one of you other posts that you were in SF for the week. That should be fun. If you get a chance (and like sushi) try Ebisu, it's on the south side of G.G. Park (9th Ave) about 1/2 block over.

It is dumb good.
