After a WinXP crash during a sync I now cannot get past the "Building music databases..." comment. I have loaded the 2.00 release dev image (and hijack kernel) but am unable to get to the prompt to try this fix. One other questions: When prompted to enter q, why is there "0 seconds to comply"?

Wow, I had a very similar problem just tonight, but I was able to get to a command prompt to fix it.

One answer: The pause at the beginning of boot is not for you to hit q, it's for programs who wish to upgrade the flash (like if you install Hijack).

I think that's a joke. If the player is working properly, Q works at any time.

You need to press ^C (Control-C) to quit the player and get to a shell prompt. You might need to hit Control-C lots of times for the player to get the message, but, looking at that log, you should be able to get control at some point on or after the "player.cpp" line. Once you've done that, you need to manually run fsck on your music partitions (look for "e2fsck" in the FAQ).

Usually the player recovers from this sort of disaster at least well enough to connect Emplode and let it run fsck, but yours seems to be an especially bad one...

If I remember the early betas, they used to actually pause there, waiting for Q before starting the player. They later added the Q command to the player app for ease of getting to the shell.
