While I was emplode over the ethernet, the player stopped working. (Download indicator hasn't moved) So I had to power off.
Now everytime I try to use emplode I get the error message: the download process failed during stage 2: Error 0xfffffff8.(For USB, serial and ethernet)
I uploaded the consumer and the developer image several time. But it still doesn't work. Any ideas?

You should be able to select a playlist and it should play music. Even if the database is damaged a bit. It's normal for it to say "end of playlist" after a synch.

Press the bottom button on the unit's face three times. It should start playing the whole unit.

Yes. It can be found at the Empeg download page under utilities. There are no instructions there on how to use it, but you can glean the necessary information from this FAQ item.

But you shouldn't need to format the disk. The database is very good at self-repairing and you should be able to use the unit without having to start over again. Try performing some more synchs and see if you can force the database to repair itself.

Actually, the message at the end of boot looks like somehow the ext2 music partition has got totally toasted - in this case, the reformat option is the only way (or manually fsck'ing the disk).

I've never seen a partition get in such a state until now, though.

Ok, I will try the MARK II Builder tomorrow.

The problem occured while I deleted all files from the playlist.Then I added some new files. During the synchronize process (ethernet), the emplode software stopped working. (Maybe a network problem) The update indicator on the player stopped too. So I had to power off the player.

Or... it is possible you may be able to join the small but growing club of people who have this problem.

As promised, I added the USB hub to see if that would help, but no joy there. The Emplode software runs perfectly on my computer at work, it just doesn't seem to like something about my PC at home.

I can't really blame empeg for this, because emplode does work properly in the vast majority of cases... but there is more than just myself now with this problem, so I am hoping for a solution. Of course, by that time, I'll already have all my music in the empeg and will no longer care!

Alex's case may be slightly different from yours, Doug.

Alex may have been hit by the known bug where the synch seems to lock up at a certain point (where there is a long pause), and just made the mistake of yanking the power instead of waiting. Although I don't know if yanking the power at this point should have caused a file system corruption, so maybe this isn't what happened.

In any case, that "long pause" bug should theoretically be swatted in 1.01 when it comes out.

If the PC software gets upset, but the empeg is still displaying the "sycnhronising" animation - LEAVE IT. After about 5-10 minutes the empeg will time-out, remount the disks read only (ie, enter into a safe state) then reboot. This is much safer than powering it down when the PC software gets upset.

If it doesn't move, something strange is happening. When you've got it working again, it might be an idea to connect the serial and keep a hyperterminal log of any messages that are sent by the empeg during sync. If it dies again, this may help determine the problem.

Mine stops moving all the time. It will sit there for a while, then later it will start again. But then, you know I'm already having synchronization problems.

Mine only ever stopped moving once -- and it stayed stopped until I pulled the power and rebooted. My unit normally times out (after emplode fails) in 3--5 minutes and reboots itself, but this time it was locked up apparently forever.

I made the upgrade with the (car2-builder.upgrade) file from the empeg homepage. It succeeded sucessfully.
After rebooting the player it displays "partitioning hd" and so on. But at the stage makeing directories it stoped for over 15 minutes. The serial log says:

I powered off the empeg and updated the player once again with "car2-builder.upgrade" image. The upgrade wizward says "The upgrade has succesfully been applied" but after this it doesn't reboot at all!

This possibly could be a ram fault. When the player dies, power it off & on and hit Ctrl-T when you first see text output from the empeg, this should enter the test code. Email the log to [email protected]

I don't know what I have done, but at the moment the player is working normally again.
I uploaded the builder image several times, and suddenly the kernel panic message disappeared. I'll test the player in the next days and if I see any problems I write to the support e-mail address. Hope that there is no hardware problem.
