I was wandering if it'd be difficult to implement different character sets for the empeg display, similarly to windows codepages. The one I need personally is 1251. I've got tons of mp3's with ID3 tags all in russian and empeg displays umlauts and stuff, no cyrillic. I know it's not in the current software rev, but can you put into the next release?

Thanks,
Misha

Hugo once said that he might make the font-making tools publicly available. If so, you could draw up a Cyrillic font yourself and copy it onto the player. I think that's all you'd need to do (i.e., no changes to the player code would be required I don't think?).

While we're on this topic, things like umlauts work fine in the player's menus, but not in Toby's InfoTex visuals. Toby, are there any plans to expand the character set for that visual? Its funny to see the screen scrolling "Blue yster Cult".

The problem is that we'd need to do large charset support - which isn't there at the moment, and needs to be pretty pervasive to be useful (ie, unicode in the tags files, etc).

Doing your own font file will just break the text displays for tunes with ISO-Latin 1 characters...

Hugo, I don't think you have to go all the way to unicode. Besides I'm not sure how compatible it would be with all the MP3 software out there. Being able to switch between a few different ASCII tables (codepages) will do just fine.

In the mean time, I would love to know if I can redefine the font for upper part (128-256) of the ASCII character table in empeg right now. For myself I don't need umlauts, I need cyrillic :). Could you please please let me know if it's doable? I know I sound unusual, but as you guys sell empeg around the world - it will keep coming up. Someone already asked for Chinise, which could be a bit more difficult without unicode :)

Thanks,
Misha Ivanov

FYI, MP3Ext, an MP3 tagging shell extension available here, writes its tags in unicode.
