Hehe. Funniest comment seen so far;
But does it play...oh, never mind
(For those of you that don't get it, one of the /. mantras that gets posted in just about every gadget topic is "But does it play Ogg Vorbis?", a reference to the fact that so many /.ers have been looking for Ogg capable devices for a long time, regardless of what the gadget actually is. Usually that comment is just lame...)
Now I'm just hoping that the empeg guys have a photo of a stack of Karmas (similar to the 'stack of empegs' photo) that can be posted in response to the obligatory "Imagine a Beowulf cluster..." post.

I'm also a fan of Peter's response to someone's surprise that Rob already had a Karma:
Have one? He is one. We build a Slashdot astroturfing bot into each unit -- that's what the Ethernet is for.

The only time I read Slashdot is when I follow a link from this BBS. These people are morons. Some don't understand that it plays MP3 as well as Ogg and others are bitching about the ethernet not being necessary. HELLO! Don't use ethernet if you prefer USB you effing tool!

Did a bit of british rub off on you at the euro meet? I've never heard an american say that, and I should know, I work with enough of them, they're all engineers too!

Sorry, but calling someone a tool is not new to me.
However, I heard Rob S. say bollocks so many times that it may enter my vocabulary.

Nope, i'm from Louisiana USA and i've been calling people tools since early high school. Then there's tool sheds, which is a step worse than a tool... and then tool farmers... which makes no sense and i think i made up, but have no way of knowing.

Random bit of useful information over there from Peter:
And, as long as I'm pestering a Rio employee, how is the ethernet support going to work?
You plug it in. If there's a DHCP server, it DHCPs, otherwise it autonets (UPnP-styley). Then it announces itself over SSDP multicast. If you're using Windows XP Home (or anything else that talks SSDP -- it's a completely open standard) an icon pops up in Network Neighbourhood. If you're using other sorts of Windows, an icon pops up in our own transfer software. Otherwise, you just point a web browser at it: there's a web server in it which will serve you a completely cross-platform Java applet to do your transfers.
I don't know whether we'll be actively helping the open-source community to implement the Ethernet protocol this time, but it certainly wouldn't be rocket science to reverse-engineer it.

You did it as an anonymous coward though, so few will see it. I would have donated a mod point to you, but Peter got them all already.

The slashdot crowd aren't ever satisfied. Something comes along which supports Ogg Vorbis and they bitch because it doesn't have a 802.11b built into it. So the next Rio product needs to be smaller than an iPod, contain a 80GB HD, have 802.11a/b/g, 1000mbit Ethernet, IEEE1394, USB2.0, FM/AM/UHF tuner, TV, kitchen sink and of course it must run Linux and you must be able to make them into a Beowulf cluster. And of course it must be sold for $9.95 because some kid can't afford anything more expensive on his daily allowance.
I'm just surprised about the huge backing for the Neuros. Okay, the thing is flexible and the actual main module itself is quite small but snap it into any of it's backpacks and it's massive! The 20GB one rivals a house brick for portability.
Usually I just read the top level stories on slashdot. The comments are usually absolute drivel and it takes way too long to weed out the good bits.

I'm just surprised about the huge backing for the Neuros. Contrast the /. crowd with a couple of "normal" users' reviews on Amazon.

I find the content much more interesting. I wonder if he meant to say this:
Otherwise, you just point a web browser at it: there's a web server in it which will serve you a completely cross-platform Java applet to do your transfers.

Ditto. There is a much higher chance of the Amazon reviewers actually having USED the thing. A lot of the stuff on slashdot is made up crap and posturing. Half the time the people don't even read the article/link/whatever that the story links to but they still feel the need to post something.
I remember a while back there was a article about some professor (Steve Mann I believe) who does cybernetics and how airport security made him remove the equipment he was wearing. I'd say there were over a hundred posts about how he must have been deeply disorientated by having the environment and information processing implants removed. If you actually read the article then you'd know what had happened and that he was perfectly fine if a bit annoyed afterwards. The level of technology the slashdot morons were implying were pure fantasy and it was evident that they hadn't even bothered to skim the article before posting their garbage.

Yeah, I signed up for /. many many moons ago before it completely degenerated, and have no idea what the password is. Since my email addy has changed many times since, I doubt I'd be able to find out. I've never been arsed to sign up again with a different name since I generally just lurk.

I have a valid login since I use their ability to customize the stories that show up. In general, many of the actually interesting science stories don't show up on the front page by default.

Ahh, PR. They need to be careful with statements like "industry leading battery life" of "more than 18 hours using an Energizer AAA." My flash-based player goes 24-30 hours on 1 Duracell AA.

A double-A is larger and carries more charge than a triple-A. So I think it would be expected that your double-A gets more life than a player with a triple-A.

I would have donated a mod point to you, but Peter got them all already. LOL, I ended up with about 30 positive mods on that thread. You guys should knock it off or they might get suspicious... I'm sure bringing in one's own cheering section from another BBS is unethical

Oh I'd expect so, too. And to be fair, 18 hours is great for 1 AAA. I just think most portable shoppers won't care about battery size or technology, just usable time between charges/swaps.
