Ok, it was almost 2am and I was ready to go. Only wanted to test the 9 and 5V at the voltage regulators on the kit after completeing step LK1, LK2. Forgot to check the amperage on my power supply and supplied around 30Amps to the board. Of course the 9V regulator blew and is now cracked. I'm very embarrassed!
1. Where can I get a new one (part. no?)?
2. What else could be blown that I need to replace?

The 9V regulator should be a normal 7809.
Best to let the current be at minimal value (200mA) when testing. But the current supplied by your power supply didn't kill your 7809, there should be a short in your circuit.

Definately agree with this. The battery in your car is capable of supplying - at a minimum - hundreds of amperes. But the empeg - and any other circuit - only draws as much as it needs.

Check carefully for short circuits between the output leg of the 9V regulator and ground (including anywhere along the copper track that the output leg is attached to. Also check that you stll have continuity between all points of the inbound track (the +12). Check the same for the ground track(s), as well as the the track connected to the 9V output - quite easy to burn off a track when you have a short...

Thanks for the tips about the short. I'd find it very surprising if I had a short anywhere as all the solder joints are perfect under the dissecting miroscope, but then again, I've never soldered anything like that, so surprises are to be asumed
I'll try to do the tests you've suggested, although I have to admit that the task looks somewhat daunting to me right now...

Depends on where you live. Here in Germany we have some big electronic stores who sell those parts. Such a 7809 doesn't cost much, about one dollar/euro or two.

If you can measure resistance, test the tree solderpoints for shorts. There is a chance of having a defective 7809, but this happens only once in a blue moon. Don't count on this.

Any shop that sells electronics components should have it - very common part.
If you have a Radio Schack near by try them. If not, I'll have to let the US guys comment on other possible sources in the US.

The second one should serve 1 Ampere (1A). Probably the first one is the same for less current. 1 A should be enough, this is 12 Watts, much for a tuner. Since you cannot provide too much current (but indeed a too high voltage), take the one with most current.
But there are some parts in different cases so if you get a picture, it should be better.

ok, went to Frys, got one that I thought said 9V 1A on the tag and soldered it in. Now it shows 8V (7.97) instead of 9V? The NTE number on it is NTE964 (over that it says 022L) Did I get the wrong one?

Also, right next to the crystal, the ztx789a transistor has the gating property only on one side of the base not on both. Is it shot, too? Could it be that this transistor is closer to the 9V regulator than the others (which are all fine)?

Forget my first question, just found out that it is a 8V regulator. Either the print on the hanger was bad, or my eyes or it was in the wrong place. Gotta get another one...
