Okay this might be a Karma wish but definatly a 3.0 wish

My player has two basic modes of play the classic down, down, down mode with everything in shuffle and here cross fade is perfect when it is shuffled.

second mode is in playing album mode where one playlist at a time is selected, here cross fade is a pain in the butt

So what i am saying is crossfade is perfect for shuffle play but no good in album mode

So could we have it so when you select shuffle the crossfade comes in by itself and when you deselect shuffle the crossfade come off again.

Now if listening to your own playlists as in not an album then yo may want a crossfade but no shuffle so you need to be able to enable the crossfade here to.

I have no idea as to what the solution is or how i can be achieved but the idea is sound.

One neat plan might be to examine the tags, and not do the crossfade if it's playing two consecutive tracks (as determined by track-number tag) from the same album (as determined by album tag) -- whether in shuffle mode or not.

This isn't perfect (if it's a compilation album, you might want adjacent songs cross-faded) but it's good enough to think about implementing...

I just have to jump in here and ask (once again) for some form of file chaining. If you are looking for material that is on the same album, this is just one tiny step forward... (asking hopefully).

I intended to write something to enable and disable crossfade on the fly based on this criteria, and then realized I have no way aside from injecting button codes to manipulate the menus to do it!

if it's a compilation album, you might want adjacent songs cross-faded

If it's a compilation album, it's likely to already have been mixed. What you want in this case is crossfade-as-gap-elimination.

That is a fantastic idea! I've been thinking along these lines a lot but hadn't really come up with anything I thought was a good way of solving the problem.

maybe examining the first x seconds of the song. if its average volume is higher than y fade in, else leave as is. also knowing the last bit of volume on the currently playing track, to know whether to fade out.
ive kept this post short, perhaps confusing.

...or, add a new placeholder system call (or whatever) in the kernel that the player calls passing the current fid and the next fid (and maybe some other info on what is in the buffer for the end/beginnings of the tracks). The placeholder call can indicate whether a cross fade should happen.

That way a lot more people with more time on their hands than the Cambridge team can come up with clever schemes for working out when to fade.
