I don't really know where to post this question, so General Forum, here I am.

As I understand it, and someone please correct me if I am wrong, the empeg player selects a song it will play and stores the MP3 into its 12 megs of memory. It also selects 2 or 3 additional songs for future play when the first one is finished. This keeps the hard drives from spinning constantly, thus helping extend their lifespan.

My question is if the empeg player has 12 megs of onboard memory, and I have one MP3 file that is 13 megs in size (Arlo Guthrie - Alice's Restaurant) then will it ever play that selection? Having never looked inside one (I am still in the queue) is the memory upgradable with standard 72 pin or 128 pin memory SIMM/DIMMS - why not take it to 64M or 128M like a lot of home computers have, and store an entire block of songs..

I have several songs longer than that ("Echoes" and about 10 other songs by Pink Floyd, Maurice Ravel's Bolero, etc.) They play fine. I don't think the Empeg stores the whole MP3 that's currently playing, I think it just stores the next X frames. Empeg guys can correct the technical details, but I know that it plays long songs. :)

I have the Abby Road CD as well, and if I can find some software that will allow me to rip the '2nd side of the album' as one long song as it was meant to be heard, instead of a collection of a lot of short songs then I will do more. I have a few CDs that are medleys of more than one song. I just didn't want my player to look at the file size and go "Oops - too long. Next.." and move on to the next song. It must load X number of frames as you suggested.

I've got a nonstop club mix at 72 mins, and that plays fine. It just loads more as needed.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to some ripping software that will let me rip multiple songs as one long MP3 file? I will use the Abby Road example - the second side of the album is made up of many small songs, but plays as one long one. Pink Floyd has medleys like this as well. I can think of many others.. is there any ripping software that will let me create the one large MP3 file I am wanting?

Yes, almost all rippers allow this. In most rippers, the start/end points for each track are just "defaults" that you can modify yourself if you want. Just tell it to rip only track 1, then modify the endpoint of that track so it coincides with the end of the album side.

In the case of AudioCatalyst, I think you can get to the track-length-modification boxes by doubleclicking on the track name.

Lately I've been using Easy CD Creator 4 to do my ripping, and it has a little box marked "Merge continuous tracks as a single file" that I haven't tried yet. I wonder how it works.

BTW, to answer your other question here, the RAM is surface-mount EDO (I think) RAM soldered directly onto the board. Because it's meant to be a "no user serviceable parts inside" box, it'd defeat the purpose to allow the user to upgrade the RAM via a slot. And believe me, when you look at the motherboard it doesn't seem to have the space (specifically, the width) for a SIMM slot.

I am currently using MusicMatch for ripping, and I don't think it supports me being able to create an MP3 that is really more than one song. It does not seem to support merging more than one MP3 in to one file either, so I will download AudioCatalyst and check it out. MusicMatch creates single song MP3s easily enough, but I really would like this one feature.

As far as the surface mount memory, that does make sense. I imagine that even a SIMM or DIMM could work itself loose from the vibrations that normal driving would cause. Not to mention the lack of available space in the unit.

I noticed that the ordering queue advanced another 250 units today.. at this pace I will be able to order sometime next week. I will miss the next batch of 250, but I should be in the one after. 12G green is what I have my eye on, and will order the blue replacement faceplate as well.

If you are on Linux (or some other Unix), definitively cdparanoia (this is its default mode of ripping). As said a number of times here, it is excellent (but slow) ripper.
