Uh-oh, problem with updating the firmware

So, I'm a newbie, had my unit for a while but haven't gotten it installed due to various reasons... just installing the software, noticed that the new version of Emplode didn't seem to work with talking to the unit too well, and figured I should upgrade the firmware to the latest/greatest.
So I do that, notice the Rio logo has come back up on the unit, don't see the upgrading software window even though the Emplode software is up (this is on XP btw), and so figure it's good to go. The unit isn't responding to button presses, so I figure I should just power it off.
Then I notice the upgrade window says it's 'pumping partitions' (I believe), after I notice it was under another window.
Unfortunately, now the unit responds to no button presses, and I cannot use the upgrade software to reinstall the firmware. Help! What can I do to frix this???
Thanks!

Okay, so I prematurely posted. Downloaded the builder file, tried to install it... got a 'couldn't find pump' error... any ideas?
Thanks again.

Okay...
First off, the version of emplode should match the version of the player software. That is a must. I recommend 2.0 final for developers as the best option for now.
Secondly, you do not upgrade the firmware through emplode. You would use the upgrader program. Make sure that your versions match.
Double check your terminal settings for your serial connection. If your serial connection is not working, you will not be able to upgrade the player.
Do not run the builder unless you are trying to start completely fresh (i.e., brand new hard drive). This is destructive and will destroy any music or configurations on your player.

Kyoryu, I think your only problem is that you pulled the plug in the middle, making your player unbootable.
The simple work around is to do the following:
- Unplug the power from the player.
- Leave it unplugged.
- Start the upgrader software.
- Answer the prompts on the upgrader software.
- ONLY WHEN the upgrader software prompts you to do so, apply power to the player.
At that point, the upgrade should work.
Make sure to use version 2.0 of everything. Stay away from 3.0 alpha for now, it's not for newbies.

I'm beginning to think I've got a bad hard drive.
I've repeatedly gotten the can't find pump errors. Finally got everything running, only to have a connection timeout during sync. Now, when I start emplode, it crashes every time during the filesystem check. (running the 2.0 version under XP). When running jemplode, it tells me there was an exception during fsck, and then a window pops up saying:
[EmpegFILEID: 2]did not exist.
[EmpegFILEID: 2]did not exist.
(yes, it says it twice)
Sound like a bad drive?
Thanks for all the help, everyone.

Possibly. Do you ever see "no hard disk found contact support" on the screen? Check for all of the possible problems listed here.

Greetings!
Had you tried building the drive? This could be a hardware problem, but I seem to remember you tried running the builder on it.

Paul,
Sure did try rebuilding the drive. Even let the disk check run for an hour or so.
Thanks!

I am wondering if the disk build failed... See this link...

Paul,
That sounds EXACTLY like what happened. Since then I've rebuilt the drive (successful), and finally got the unit installed in the car.
Thanks for all the help, everyone.

And then it turns out I have a bad cable! Well, thanks to the info here and on riocar.org, I was able to recrimp the cables (while recovering from hernia surgery, even!)
Thanks for all the help, everyone!
