I'm confused about seeing the two lines in the boot log.

The memory report following is correct for 32MB though - the first line reports in bytes, the following lines in kB. If you divide 31928320 by 1024 you get 31880. The low 'free' memory count is because linux uses an aggressive caching strategy and does not discard old data immediately upon the premise that it may be needed again soon. Read here for an overview of linux page caching.

Here's a really dumb question. How do you get hyperterminal to copy in Windows XP? Sometimes it will and sometimes it won't. Right now it's not. I've selected all and hit control+c as well as selecting copy in the menu, but there is nothing to paste, even with a screen full of boot log! My only solution has been to be to a W2K computer.

The c2000000 'failure' is where the kernel is trying to test beyond 32MB.

Because Hyperterminal on Windows saves a certain amount of scrollback as part of the .ht file. I don't think there's actually a way to clear the scrollback in hyperterminal other than to delete the .ht file and start over again. Yeah, I know it sucks.

One thing I have notice and it's probably also due to the extra inherent disk caching built in to Linux the Mark mentioned.

Before the RAM upgrade with 3.0a7 I would get frequent short music pauses when entering the playlists menu (I think the disk was spinning up) or each time I'd type a letter in the search function. This is completely gone now probably due to the empeg not having to access the disk quite as much.

BTW: Could an admin delete my image please - I can't edit the post anymore. I apologise for making it so big causing everyone's browsers to stretch everything out.

How do you get hyperterminal to copy in Windows XP?

Use TeraTerm instead.

Alternatively, set Hyperterminal to log to a file, and pick up the relevant data from there.

I think I'll give my Mk2a a shot over the next couple of weeks, but thought I'd get some reassurance. Did you come up against anything difficult? Aside from everything just being very small and fiddly? Is it easy to accidentally splurge (technical term) solder across adjacent pins?
I gather it is just a case of soldering the two chips on - all except pin 14 on each which gets wired to pin 123, correct?

In my experience, patience, a good light, a half decent iron and possibly some magnification is all you need. Straighten the pins on the new chips (dead important), line them up on the existing ones (make sure your pin 1 spots match up). Try genexias tips for soldering the pins down, with the right amount of solder on the tip it works a treat. Keep pin 14 out of the way and wire the pin on both chips to 123.

I would look at the pictures on this thread so give you an idea of which CPU pin to use, that's the bit I like the least. I sure that if mine fails it'll be that connection.

Yeah, be careful how you handle pin 14. It becomes stressed when it gets bent upward and even the slight stress from attaching the C/S line to it can cause it to break. This happened to us and getting at the remaining lead that is buried inside the package is not easy.

That just happened to me last night when installing mine. Unfortunately where it broke I know I don't have the skills to repair it. So yeah, be careful on pin 14.

So did it break flush with the side of the package? That's what happened when ours broke, but we just dug and dug until enough lead was exposed to attach the wire. You could try that if that's what happened. The worst part of replacing the chip rather than repairing it is removing the damaged one without disturbing the OEM ones below.

It did break flush. It was of course after every leg was attached. I did remove both of them after that until I can get new chips. I had no problems removing them and everything is working just like before. How did you get through the package to get to the lead?

We used a sharp X-acto blade to slowly chip away at the epoxy material until we got enough of the lead exposed. It was probably easier than desoldering the damaged chip (cheaper too).

Does anyone have any tips on pulling the main board out of the player? Will it be obvious when I start? I'm sending my player off to Mark for and IDE repair and he requested I send only the board.

It's fairly obvious. Just take usual anti-static precautions and don't forget to remove the hex huts from the serial port!

That's just some careful trial-and-error, you'll be fine.

While you've got the display off and the motherboard out, I recommend tightening and using loctite on all the screws that connect the handle, those loosen rather easily. If you've got the skills, I also recommend this. A rattling handle is annoying. My friend Tod's handle actually squeaks as it rattles and I keep telling him I'll fix it for him if only I he'd let me get my mitts on the player for long enough.
