does anyone know of a utility that will allow me to defrag a hard drive to my liking?
ie. ive certain things that i would like for it to try to move in or out on the platter, so that i can put my most used and frequently accessed programs (that i care about being fast) to the faster area. such as games that have to load large maps.
i did a google search, but couldnt find anything. i did find one that some place reviewed and expressed a con of the software being the inability to do what im seeking.

Diskeeper is supposed to do all that automatically.

I could be wrong (I'm not an NTFS or FAT expert), but I don't think that the location of a directory entry has anything to do with the location of the files contained within it. So your idea of automatic placement isn't going to work. Unless, again, I'm wrong.

good point. ideally it would allow selection of files/folders. if you choose a folder it would read it as choosing all files under the folder. again, i might be asking too much

Why not just partition the drive with some small partitions where you want them and put the files there? Good operating systems do this with the swap data.
