Just trying to get a feel for how I want to place things in my new house...

1) How big is your TV?
2) How far away is your couch from the TV?
3) If you have rear speakers for dolby/dts, are they on the side of you, or behind you?

Screen is approx. 120 cm wide (using projector), about 3 m from viewers. Back speakers just a little back from sides.

42" and the couch sits about 9 feet away. I have rear speakers, but I haven't gotten around to installing them since I moved in (nearly two years ago). Now I am planning on moving this summer, so let's hope the next house accomodates the set up a bit better.

As it currently stands, my couch butts up against the wall, leaving me limited options for speaker placement. When the wife and kids are home, I rarely get a chance to watch movies at the appropriate level anyway, so I have a nice set of headphones that allow me the comfort of watching a movie without disturbing the rest of the house. On the occasion that I do pull out the surrounds and string up some ad-hoc cable wire, the speakers are on either side of the couch, slightly above ear level, about 4'-5' from my head.

Sounds like the previous owner's setup in what's now my house (a small Victorian terrace; the whole room is only 11ft in that direction). It was IMO a bit much, and made it feel weird using the room for anything other than TV. Now I've got a 17in widescreen TFT (I couldn't stand 50Hz flicker out of the corner of my eye, and 100Hz CRTs don't come in small sizes) which is much more like it. Oh, and no rear speakers as yet.

Something to consider in all of this... Large widescreen televisions shrink really fast.

Our is 46" and we thought it was HUGE when we got it. Now I look at it and think I could stand 56" easily...

Don't believe me? Ask anyone on the hometheaterspot.com forums. These things really do shrink.

1.) 27"
2.) 6-8'
3.) I have them to the side a little higher than ear level because most US DVDs are DD5.1 and that is the optimal setting for Dolby Digital whereas DTS recommends behind the listener at ear level. I wish more DVDs were released with DTS because of the lower compression than the DD compression (~1.5MB/s vs 768K or 640K)
